First-Place Showdown

Softball heads to Albany for key three-game AE series this weekend

Winners of its last seven games, Binghamton (28-12, 10-2 AE) heads to Albany (29-12, 9-1 AE) for a pivotal three-game series against the Great Danes. The two squads play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and are scheduled to wrap up with a single game at noon on Sunday.

Binghamton would move into first place in the America East by taking two or more games in the series. Otherwise, the Great Danes will retain their lead with one week left in the regular season.

STORY LINES

- Binghamton won 12-4 and 11-8 at Buffalo in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday. Senior designated player Griffin McIver clubbed three home runs and had five RBI during the afternoon. Also driving in five runs was junior shortstop Crysti Eichner, who was a perfect 4-for-4 in the nightcap.

- The Bearcats continue to be one of the top offensive teams in the NCAA this season. Their .349 batting average ranks fifth overall and their 7.33 runs per game ranks seventh. In addition, Binghamton ranks No. 11 with a .549 slugging percentage.

- Albany took two out of three games against visiting Maine last weekend to retain its grip on first place in the America East. Elizabeth Snow leads the conference in batting with a .439 average. She also has eight home runs and 37 RBI. As a team, the Great Danes are second in the America East to Binghamton with a .322 team batting average.

- Last season, the Great Danes took two out of three games at Binghamton during the regular season (April 18-19). In the America East Tournament, however, the Bearcats defeated Albany 5-3 in a first-round matchup. Current senior outfielder Sydney Harbaugh led off the game with a home run. She later scored another run on a wild pitch.

- Sophomore outfielder Jessica Rutherford ranks second in the America East with a .415 batting average and is tied for third with 36 RBI. With 54 hits, she is one hit away from tying the Binghamton single-season program record, which was set by Mollie Lehman back in 1997.

- Senior designated player Griffin McIver is the America East Player of the Week for the second time this season. She leads the America East with 12 home runs and a .859 slugging percentage.
