VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (25-22, 17-4 America East) welcomes Maine (18-31, 7-13 AE) to Varsity Field for a doubleheader Friday. The teams will begin with a nine-inning opener at noon followed by a seven-inning nightcap.
The Bearcats have already clinched the regular season title and No. 1 seed for the upcoming America East tournament. The only thing left to play for is to try to extend the team's unbeaten streak at home, which stands at 12. Binghamton is the only team in the nation with a perfect home record in 2016. The team has won 14 of its last 18 games.
Binghamton ranks second in the America East in hitting (.297), seventh in pitching (5.05) and first in fielding (.980). That fielding mark ranks No. 5 in the entire country. Binghamton has more double plays (40) than errors (34).
Junior
Jake Cryts (6-4, 4.96 ERA) will pitch the 9-inning opener and senior
Mike Bunal (7-3, 4.01 ERA) will start today's 7-inning nightcap.Â
The Black Bears are still jockeying for position in the standings and can finish either fifth or sixth. Maine ranks sixth in the league in hitting (.249), fourth in pitching (4.68 ERA) and sixth in fielding (.964).
The team has just one player hitting over .300 (Danny Casals, .305). Casals also has team-highs of six home runs and 36 RBI. Tyler Schwanz has 17 doubles and 23 extra-base hits.
Maine is expected to throw senior right-hander Logan Fullmer (4-2, 2.48 ERA) in the opener and sophomore righty John Arel (2-8, 4.19 ERA) in Game 2.
The teams met in Orono back on March 26-27 and BU swept the three games, 6-1, 8-1 and 2-0. Maine still holds a 32-27 edge in the all-time series.Â
