VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton University Director of Athletics
Patrick Elliott has announced the hiring of
Kevin McKeown as men's lacrosse coach. McKeown (Mc-CUE-en) is a 2006 graduate of Binghamton and a member of the University's Athletics Hall of Fame.
"We are excited to welcome Kevin home, and have him lead our men's lacrosse program," said Elliott. "Kevin has demonstrated a keen ability to recruit and develop quality student-athletes, with an emphasis on athletic and academic excellence."
"I would like to thank President Stenger, Director of Athletics
Patrick Elliott, and Associate Director of Athletics
Dave Simek, for providing me with the opportunity to lead the lacrosse program at Binghamton University," said McKeown. "It is a dream come true to return to Binghamton to establish a winning tradition and bring an America East Championship to the University."
The native of Brewster, New York, has been the defensive coordinator at Bellarmine University for the last two seasons. Previously, he served as interim head coach at Binghamton for the 2011 season, leading the Bearcats to the America East Tournament. McKeown worked as the defensive coordinator and goalie coach at BU from 2008-2011.
As a player, McKeown is the most decorated Bearcat in program history. He earned USILA All-America honors in 2004, becoming the first male Division I athlete to receive the recognition at BU. McKeown was the anchor for one of the top defenses in the nation, as Binghamton allowed no more than eight goals in conference play and advanced to the America East Championship Game. He went on to take all-conference awards three times in his career and picked up Scholar All-America connotation in 2006. He was inducted into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.
At Bellarmine, McKeown helped the Knights secure their first-ever postseason berth this past season. In 2015, Bellarmine defeated nationally-ranked Marquette, 9-3, marking the Knights' first-ever win over a ranked opponent.
In 2013, McKeown was the defensive coordinator at Siena. He guided the Saints to a MAAC Championship finals appearance.
After getting a master's degree at Elmira College in 2008, McKeown returned to his alma mater to serve as an assistant coach. He eventually took over the program for the 2011 campaign. The Bearcats were picked to finish last in the America East preseason poll, but McKeown took Binghamton to a second-place finish in the regular season and a postseason bid.
The Bearcats won four games last season and return several key contributors for the 2017 season.
Joe Licata was named to the America East All-Rookie Team, while
Dan Mazurek earned all-league honors following the 2015 campaign.
