Volleyball Falls Twice Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C.- Binghamton volleyball dropped a pair of matches Saturday at the College of Charleston Invitational. BU fell to South Carolina and then Charleston to conclude action on its opening weekend for the 2016 season. Sarah Ngo was named to the all-tournament team.

Against the Gamecocks, the Bearcats fell by scores of 25-13, 28-26, and 25-20. After dropping the opener, Binghamton bounced back with a solid performance in the second set. Trailing 21-16, BU took advantage of three consecutive USC errors and then Bianca Anderson scored. Ngo hit Shultz to continue the run and tie the game at 21. Ngo assisted on another Shultz point and followed with an ace, giving the Bearcats a 23-22 edge. A Gamecock miscue allowed BU to have set point, but South Carolina eventually fended off three Binghamton game point situations and claimed the frame, 28-26.

In the third game, Allison Hovie made her mark. With BU down, 7-4, Hovie went on a serving run, posting a kill and an ace to get Binghamton back into the contest. Later in the set, freshman Lauren Kornmann tallied three points to keep the Bearcats close. South Carolina was too much in the end, ending the bout in the third game.

Hovie and Shultz each scored 11 points, while Kaelan Haag added 10 points. Ngo recorded 30 assists and Bailey Walker compiled 14 digs.

Charleston defeated Binghamton by scores of 25-13, 26-24, and 25-18 in the nightcap Saturday. Midway through the second frame, BU put together a run, as Haag and Shultz each scored and then Kristella Morina served an ace, giving Binghamton a 15-12 advantage. Later, Walker served consecutive aces and then Kornmann scored twice, putting BU up, 23-22. Ngo found Morina for a kill to push the Cougars to the brink, but the hosts rallied with three straight points to take the set and a 2-0 match lead on their way to a victory.

Shultz recorded 10 points and Ngo logged 21 helpers and seven digs. Walker produced 12 digs.

Ngo earned all-tournament recognition after notching 87 assists, 23 digs, and four aces.

The Bearcats (0-3) return to action next weekend at the St. John's Invitational. They will play three matches on September 2-3, facing La Salle, Niagara, and St. John's in non-conference action.
