Volleyball splits final two matches at Northeastern Tourney

Bearcats topple Fordham, lose to host Huskies; finish runnerup

BOSTON, Mass . - Binghamton volleyball (3-6) split its final two matches Saturday at the Northeastern Tournament, defeating Fordham, 3-1, before losing to the host school, 3-0, at Cabot Gym.

In their first match of the day, the Bearcats took down Fordham, 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, and 25-17.

Fordham jumped out to a 10-5 advantage in the first game, but Binghamton responded in a big way. BU posted an extended 20-10 spurt to win the opening frame. Sarah Ngo assisted on a pair of Lauren Kornmann kills and a Bianca Anderson point. Kornmann followed with two aces and then Bailey Walker tallied a pair of aces of her own, breaking a 13-all tie. Kills by Gaby Alicea and Kristella Morina stretched the Bearcats' margin. Leading 22-18, Ngo found Alicea for a point and then Kornmann served an ace. A Ram service error handed BU the set, 25-20.

Ngo and Kornmann each notched aces early in the second game, as the teams went back and forth to an eventual 14-14 tie. Ngo hit Anderson and Kornmann for kills and then Walker assisted on an Alicea point. Ngo's ensuing ace made it 18-14 and caused a Fordham timeout. Alicea and Anderson each scored and then Morina and Erin Shultz put down a block for a 22-17 advantage. Ngo assisted on a Morina point to push the Bearcats closer to set point. Shultz scored and then Fordham erred to give BU a 25-18 victory in the second frame.

The Rams bounced back with a win in the third game, but Binghamton was not deterred. Ngo got things started in the fourth with two early aces, lifting BU to a 4-0 advantage. Fordham answered, tying the set at 13. Ngo registered a kill and then an ace. Walker then set up Kornmann and Alicea as Binghamton grabbed an 18-13 margin. Three Alicea points kept the Bearcats ahead and then Shultz scored to make it 24-17. On match point, Ngo found Shultz for a kill, giving Binghamton its second straight win.

Alicea hit .414, compiling 15 kills. Ngo totaled 36 assists, 11 digs, and 5 aces, logging her second consecutive double-double. Walker contributed 15 digs, 6 assists, and 4 aces. Kornmann added nine kills and four aces, while Anderson hit .412 on her way to nine kills. Shultz notched eight kills and 11 digs and Morina generated eight kills and six total blocks. Kelly Leach pitched in with eight digs and a pair of assists.

Later against former America East foe Northeastern, BU fell behind in each of the three sets and couldn't rally. In the opening set, six straight Northeastern points early in the set provided a cushion. With Morina and Alicea (4 kills each) leading the way, BU pulled to within six, 23-17, before the Huskies finished off the set.

The Bearcats raised their attack percentage to .220 in the second set but Northeastern responded with .304 hitting. Alicea added five more kills to pace the attack but after cutting its margin to 23-20 late, BU surrendered the set.

The third set was the closest, with the Bearcats using a 6-0 run midway through to grab the lead. Anderson had a kill to give BU an 11-10 lead and later combined with Schultz for a block. An ace from Walker made it 19-15 and then Marina's crosscourt hammer gave BU a 21-17 lead. But Northeastern finished the game on an 8-2 run, despite a late kill down the line from Schultz.

Alicea wound up with 11 kills (.333 attack percentage), Anderson had five blocks and eight kills and Morina added eight kills. Ngo handed out 31 assists and Walker contributed 17 digs.

Alicea and Morina were both named to the all-tournament team.

Binghamton plays a non-conference match at Siena on Wednesday. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Loudonville.
