Volleyball Marches Past Siena, 3-1, Wednesday

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.- Binghamton volleyball won, 3-1, at Siena Wednesday night. The Bearcats won by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 17-25, and 25-16 in the non-conference match at the Alumni Recreation Center.

Gaby Alicea scored to open the match and then tallied another kill early to make it 4-1. Siena rallied, but a Bianca Anderson block and an Erin Shultz kill gave Binghamton a 20-16 advantage. The hosts gained the lead at 22-21, but the Bearcats closed strong to prevail. Sarah Ngo found Shultz and then Lauren Kornmann for points to regain the advantage. After a Siena timeout, Kornmann and Anderson teamed up for a block and then Anderson and Alicea put down another stuff, lifting BU to a 25-22 victory in the first game.

The Saints started the second set well, but Binghamton found its rhythm, recording an extended 20-3 run on its way to another set win. The home team went up, 8-3, and then Ngo hit Kornmann and Shultz for points. Kornmann served an ace and then Kristella Morina scored. A Saint error tied the frame at 8. A pair of Shultz kills kept the ball rolling in the Bearcats' favor and then Ngo followed with an ace. An Anderson block sparked an 8-0 run midway through the game. Alicea notched two kills and then produced an ace. Two Kornmann points pushed BU closer and then Morina put down a block to close out a 25-16 decision. The Bearcats hit .361 as a group in the frame, logging 15 kills.

In the third set, Siena bounced back, taking a 25-17 frame and forcing a fourth game. Early in that set, Ngo assisted on kills by Alicea and Kornmann to even the score at 5. With the set tied at 12, Siena erred and then Shultz collected an ace. BU held a 16-15 margin after a Saint score, but the Bearcats finished strong, registering eight consecutive points to get to match point. Kornmann combined with Morina for a block and then the freshman put down a kill. Ngo set up Morina for two points as Binghamton went up, 23-15. Each team followed with a point and then the hosts served out of bounds on match point, allowing the Bearcats to capture their third win in four tries.
