PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Binghamton volleyball swept Central Connecticut State at the Brown Invitational Saturday. BU also dropped a tight four-set match to New Mexico State, as
Kristella Morina and
Erin Shultz were named to the all-tournament team this weekend.

The Bearcats dispatched CCSU in straight sets, winning by scores of 25-10, 25-23, and 25-14 to wrap up action at the event. The Blue Devils committed several errors early in the first game, allowing BU to play with a lead. Ahead 10-5,
Sarah Ngo found
Lauren Kornmann for a kill and then scored herself. Kornmann and
Bianca Anderson then teamed up for a block and a 13-5 margin, forcing a CCSU timeout.

Anderson and
Gaby Alicea put down a block and then Alicea posted a pair of kills as Binghamton stretched its lead to 18-6. Alicea and Shultz each tallied two late kills, lifting BU to a 15-point victory.

Central Connecticut looked better in the second frame, but it was still not enough to overcome the Bearcats. Alicea recorded a kill and two aces, as BU took an 8-6 advantage. Ngo found Shultz and Morina for points and eventually, Kornmann and Anderson combined for a block and an 18-13 difference. Alicea and Shultz were again key late in the set, scoring two points apiece, leading to a Devil miscue on game point, allowing BU to go up, 2-0, in the contest.

Binghamton was stellar in the third set, as Alicea notched a kill and then an ace for a 7-3 lead. Shultz pulled the same kill-ace combination as BU expanded its margin. With a 22-14 advantage,
Kaelan Haag produced a kill and then CCSU made two attack errors, giving Binghamton a 25-14 win and a sweep of the Blue Devils.

Alicea finished with 14.5 points, hitting .348 for the match. Shultz posted 12 points and 12 digs, attacking at a .391 clip. Ngo compiled 28 assists and 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Bailey Walker logged 16 digs and Anderson made eight block assists.

In the first match of the day, the Bearcats fell in a competitive match to 2015 NCAA Tournament participant New Mexico State. The Aggies took the contest by scores of 23-25, 27-25, 26-24, and 25-21.

NMSU jumped out to leads of 6-0 and 11-2 in the opening game. Binghamton then swung the set, making a dramatic comeback to win the frame. Morina recorded a kill and Alicea served an ace to begin the rally. Trailing 16-10, Ngo hit Kornmann and Anderson for kills. Ngo then notched an ace, followed by a NMSU error, pulling BU within 16-13. Alicea scored twice to continue to the rally and then Shultz and Morina combined for a block, sparking a 6-0 BU spurt. Shultz and Morina each scored and then the Aggies made a miscue and Morina put down a block, giving Binghamton a 21-20 edge. With the set even at 23, Kornmann scored and then Anderson completed the comeback, tallying a kill for a 25-23 victory.

The rally from a nine-point deficit to win the set was the largest comeback by the Bearcats since September 8, 2014. Binghamton came back from a 24-15 deficit to beat Siena, 26-24, in the first game of their match on that day.

The teams battled for the duration of the match, with the Aggies coming away with tight victories in the ensuing three sets.

Ngo led with 39 assists and eight digs. Shultz put up 17 points, while Kornmann contributed 14.5 points. Walker generated 19 digs and four helpers. Morina hit .462 on her way to 11.5 points, while Alicea added 10.5 points in the bout.

On their way to all-tournament recognition, Morina totaled 32 points, including 14 blocks, while Shultz put up 36.5 points and 19 digs.

Binghamton (6-7) hosts Albany in the 2016 home and America East opener on Friday, September 23, at the West Gym.
