Volleyball Drops Home Opener to Albany, 3-1, Friday

VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton volleyball fell, 3-1, to Albany Friday night. The Bearcats dropped their home opener by scores of 27-25, 25-14, 21-25, and 25-12. Sarah Ngo tallied 33 assists and 8 digs in the America East contest at the West Gym.

The first set was a thriller, with neither side able to get much clearance on the scoreboard. A pair of Gaby Alicea kills tied it at 5, and then three Albany errors allowed the hosts to grab an 8-6 lead. Ngo found Bianca Anderson and then Alicea for points and a 15-12 margin later in the frame. The Great Danes took a 20-19 edge, but Lauren Kornmann scored and then Anderson and Ngo combined for a block to regain the lead. Anderson posted three kills as Binghamton took a 25-24 advantage. Albany benefitted from a close line call on set point and the visitors pounced, scoring the next two points for a 27-25 victory.

After Albany took the second set, the Bearcats rallied in the third. Early kills by Kornmann gave BU the lead and then Ngo hit Anderson for a point and an 8-6 difference. Allison Hovie followed with a pair of kills and Alicea served an ace. In a 6-0 spurt, Ngo scored and LaGoy aced, forcing an Albany timeout. Kornmann came back with a point, and after a Dane error, the freshman scored again. A setting error by the visitors allowed Binghamton to take a 21-12 lead. Albany made a late run, but a trio of errors gave BU enough to take a 25-21 decision. The Great Danes responded in the fourth frame, though, taking a 25-12 win and closing out the match.

Ngo finished with 33 assists, 8 digs, and pair of kills. Kornmann scored 12.5 points, while Anderson added nine on .375 hitting. Bailey Walker compiled 19 digs to lead the defense. Laini Leindecker paced Albany with 18 points.

Binghamton (6-8. 0-1 AE) takes the rest of the weekend off and then hosts a pair of conference matches next weekend. Hartford visits on Friday, September 30, and then BU takes on UMass Lowell on Sunday, October 2, at the West Gym.
