Volleyball Tops Stony Brook 3-2

Bearcats win close match in five sets

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team (6-13, 3-3 AE) defeated Stony Brook (13-8, 3-2 AE) in five sets on Friday night at the West Gym.

Binghamton won the first set 25-22, dropped the second 16-25, won the third 25-15, fell in the fourth 20-256 and won the final set 15-12 to take the match.

In the first set, both teams battled to a 10-10 tie before the Bearcats prevailed to a 17-12 lead and held on until the end of the set winning on a kill from Elis Gadelha.

Both teams were tied at nine in the second set - Stony Brook then scored four straight points on a kill and three Binghamton attacking errors. Later in the set, the Seawolves took a 23-13 lead and scored the final two points on a service ace and kill to tie the match 1-1.

Binghamton got out to an early lead in the third game and never looked back. The Bearcats scored their final four points on kills from Gaby Alicea and Lexi LaGoy.

In the fourth set, Stony Brook was the team to take an early 13-7 lead over the Bearcats. The Seawolves built on their lead and eventually took the set 25-20.

In the final set, both teams went point-for-point until the Bearcats took a 13-11 lead on a kill from Erin Shultz. Stony Brook then recorded a kill, but the Bearcats answered on kills from Kaelan Haag and LaGoy to win the set 15-12 and take the match 3-2.

The Bearcats posted 70 kills for a .276 hitting percentage, their second highest hitting percentage of the season.  Alicea lead the Bearcats with 22 points on 22 kills, while LaGoy produced 15 kills and Haag added 13. Sarah Ngo posted 56 assists, just one shy of her career high. Alicea also recorded 24 digs while libero Samantha Gioiosa added 17.

The Bearcats are back in action next Friday when they host Albany to begin their second round of America East play.
