Volleyball Tops Hartford Friday Night

Bearcats beat Hawks 3-1

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team (9-14, 6-4 AE) defeated Hartford (5-18, 2-7 AE) 3-1 on Friday night at the West Gym.

Binghamton won the first set 25-19 and the second set 25-16, dropped the third 20-15 and won the fourth 25-11.

The Bearcats got out to an early 8-2 lead in the first set on two kills from Gaby Alicea and Lexi LaGoy and a handful of Hartford errors. Binghamton went on to control the lead and score the final two points of the set on kills from Alicea and LaGoy.

Binghamton again got out to an early lead in the second set, taking a 6-1 advantage over Hartford. The Hawks battled back to within three points later in the set, but their efforts were not enough to take down the Bearcats. Binghamton won the set 25-16 after scoring the final 6 points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Hartford kept their hopes alive in the third set, taking down Binghamton 25-20.

The Bearcats dominated the fourth set, winning 25-11 after taking a 17-4 lead to start the set. Binghamton went on to win the set on the heels of LaGoy's four kills in the final eight points.

LaGoy and Alicea each added 13.5 points for the Bearcats. LaGoy recorded 12 kills for a .474 hitting percentage while Alicea posted 13 kills and nine digs. Sarah Ngo added 37 assists and Samantha Gioiosa tallied 13 digs for Binghamton. As a team, the Bearcats finished the match with a .229 hitting percentage on 54 total kills.

Binghamton is back in action this Sunday when they host UMBC at 1 p.m. on senior day.
