Volleyball Tops UMBC 3-1 on Senior Day

Bearcats post fourth win a row

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team (10-14, 7-4 AE) topped UMBC (13-11, 5-5 AE) 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the West Gym. The Bearcats won the first set 25-22, dropped the second 23-25, won the first 25-15 and the fourth 25-12. Binghamton posted 64 total kills in the match. Binghamton has now won four matches in a row and five of their lat six. In addition the Bearcats have moved into second place in the America East conference. 

Prior to the match, Binghamton honored their three graduating seniors, Kristella Morina, Lexi LaGoy and Sarah Ngo.

Both teams went point-for-point in the first set until Binghamton was able to take a 18-14 advantage on a kill by Erin Shultz. UMBC scored the next four points to tie the score at 18-18. Two kills from Gaby Alicea and Kristella Morina put Binghamton ahead 20-19. UMBC scored the next point off a Binghamton attacking error to tie the score once again. The Bearcats hung tough though scoring five points on three kills, one ace and one error to take the first set 25-22.

UMBC scored the final five points of the second set to win 25-23 over the Bearcats and tie the match 1-1.

Binghamton was able to get out to a 23-12 lead over UMBC in the third set. UMBC scored on a Binghamton blocking error to make the score 23-12, but two kills from Alicea ended the game for the Bearcats and Binghamton took a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The Bearcats dominated the fourth set, quickly getting out to a 13-3 lead. Later in the game, Binghamton won the match on a kill from senior Kristella Morina.

Gaby Alicea led the Bearcats with 18.5 points on 17 kills. Kaelan Haag posted a career-high 14 kills for .297 hitting percentage. Erin Shultz added 13 kills while Lexi LaGoy posted 11 kills and Kristella Morina recorded nine. Setter Sarah Ngo assisted on 43 points and tallied 15 digs. Freshman libero Samantha Gioiosa posted nine assists and 15 digs for Binghamton.

The Bearcats have a bye this Friday but are back in action for the final conference match of the season at Stony Brook on November 12.
