Men's Lacrosse Tops Colgate in Season Opener 11-8

Moore nets four goals for the Bearcats in first win of the season

Box Score VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's lacrosse (1-0) recorded its first win of 2017 with an 11-8 victory over visiting Colgate (0-2) on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Senior Tom Moore led the way for the Bearcats, contributing four goals and one assist. Classmate Sean Gilroy recorded a hat trick and senior goalie Tanner Cosens had 15 saves on the day.

"I thought we shared the ball really well." first-year head coach Kevin McKeown said. "We've done that through the five weeks of pre-season as well. Sean (Gilroy) and Tom (Moore) did a great job finishing with the ball for us today. The off-ball movement was key in our offense today and created a lot of opportunities for us."

The Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game on two goals by Gilroy. The Raiders answered with one goal by Griffin Brown with 11:25 left in the first period before Moore scored his first goal of the game on an assist from Liam Reaume. Chase Wittich answered for Colgate with a goal to end the period.

In the second period, Tyler DeLuca started things off for the Bearcats with his first goal of the season at 10:57. The Raiders were quiet in the second period, scoring no goals. T.J. Tiernan added the fifth goal for Binghamton at 5:16 on an assist from Thomas McAndrew.

The Raiders got hot after halftime with four goals in the third period. But the Bearcats maintained the lead with three goals of their own - Moore added his second goal and Stephen Petrelli and Thomas McAndrew added goals.

Binghamton sealed the lead in the final period holding off a strong effort from Colgate. Gilroy scored 6 minutes into the period on an assist from Timothy Mattiace and Moore added his fourth goal of the game from Matt Kaser with 8:39 remaining. Colgate scored back-to-back goals to cut its deficit to 10-8. But Moore capped off a great day with his fourth goal with 52 seconds remaining to ensure the Bearcats win.

Colgate held a 44-43 edge in shots. Cosens was one save shy of his career record for saves in a game.

The Bearcats host Marist at the Bearcats Sports Complex next Saturday.
