VESTAL, N.Y. - Having won 11 of its last 13 games, Binghamton baseball (11-5, 2-1 America East) hosts UMBC (8-12, 2-2 AE) in a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The teams will play a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning contest to finish out their three-game set.
On Saturday, Junior shortstop
Paul Rufo hit a tiebreaking three-run home run in the fifth inning and sophomore
Nick Gallagher (W, 3-1) moved his ERA to 1.08 with another strong outing as Binghamton baseball (11-5, 2-1 America East) toppled visiting UMBC (8-12, 2-2 AE) 9-1 Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
The game was BU's home opener and the first at the newly renovated turf complex, which received a dramatic fall facelift thanks to a record $2.2 million anonymous gift. The win was BU's 11th in its last 13 games.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, BU put two runners on before Rufo sent a 1-0 offering over the wall in right field for his second home run of the season. The Bearcats added a five-spot in the seventh inning to complete the scoring.
Rufo went 2-for-4 with three RBI as did junior catcher
Jason Agresti. Agresti capped the seventh-inning flurry with a two-out, two-run double. Junior center fielder
CJ Krowiak and junior second baseman
Luke Tevlin had two hits apiece. Tevlin and senior left fielder
Darian Herncane drove in a run each.Â
On Sunday, junior left-hander
Nick Wegmann (2-2, 2.59 ERA) will pitch the opener and junior right-hander
Jacob Wloczewski (0-1, 5.28 ERA) will take the ball for the nightcap.
After yesterday's loss, the Retrievers have won six of their last eight games. They began conference play by taking two of three against Albany last weekend.
On Saturday, UMBC left seven on base and couldn't break through against BU pitching. First team all-conference catcher Hunter Dolshun leads the team with a .367 average. Junior outfielder Collin Stack is hitting .297 with a team-best 16 RBI. Stack went 2-for-3 yesterday. Junior right-hander Matt Chanin (1-3, 4.50 ERA) is expected to start Game 1 and senior lefty Joe Vanderplas (2-2, 4.87 ERA) will go in Game 2.
Binghamton leads the all-time series 43-13, though UMBC has won seven of the last 10 head-to-head meetings. Last year in Baltimore, BU won two of three.
