Volleyball Sweeps UMass Lowell Friday Night

Bearcats top Riverhawks 3-0 for first conference win

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team (4-11, 1-1 AE) defeated UMass Lowell (5-10, 0-2 AE) in straight sets on Friday night at the West Gym.

Bearcats swept Riverhawks 26-24, 25-22 and 26-24.

Both teams battled point-for-point to a 23-23 tie in the first set. Lowell took a 24-23 lead on a kill but the Bearcats returned the favor on back-to-back  kills from Gaby Alicea and Kristella Morina to take a 25-24 lead. The Bearcats scored then scored the set point on an attacking error by the Riverhawks.

It was a tight set again in the second, until the Bearcats took a 18-15 lead over the Riverhawks. Binghamton went on to score two straight points on a kill from Lexi LaGoy and a Lowell attacking error to take a 20-18 advantage. Later, a service ace from Alicea and two UMass Lowell ball handling errors gave the Bearcats the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set Lowell got out to an early lead, but couldn't hold off the Bearcats. After fighting back from an 8-3 deficit, Binghamton went on to take a 17-10 lead. After Lowell tied the set at 24, the Bearcats scored two straight points on a kill from Alicea and a Riverhawk ball handling error to win the set and the match.

Alicea led the Bearcats with 13 points on 10 kills. Kristella Morina added six kills five blocks while Sarah Ngo assisted on 29 points.
