Bearcats remain unbeaten in dual meets

VESTAL, N.Y. – It was a day of records and milestones for the Binghamton swimming & diving program on Saturday afternoon at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center.

The Bearcat men's team defeated NJIT 205-91, raising its 2018-19 dual meet record to a perfect 2-0. The women's squad, meanwhile, held an intersquad meet have won its first three meets earlier in the season.

Between the two squads, there was one school record, one pool record, one freshman record and most significantly, four divers qualifying for the NCAA Division I Zone Diving Meet.

"We have been a little banged up as of late but we went out today and performed very well," head coach Brad Smith said. "Our teams stayed strong throughout the meet and it was really encouraging to see the results we had."

In the men's meet, sophomore David Walters swept both the one- and three-meter diving events with scores of 313.80 and 304.87 respectively. In the process, he met the qualifying standard for the NCAA Zone Meet in the one-meter competition (300.00). Freshman teammate Chris Egan was second in the one-meter event, also reaching the Zone qualifying standard with a score of 305.17.

There are five NCAA Division I Zone Diving Meets – based on geographic location – that will be held this year. Binghamton is in Zone A, which will hold its meet March 11-13 at Navy.

Walters and Egan are the first Binghamton men's divers to qualify for the NCAA Zone Meet since Devin Zdanowksi in 2015. Furthermore, Walter's one-meter score is the second highest in Binghamton program history, trailing only Ryan Graham's 2008 score of 348.00.

Binghamton had five other double-winners in the men's meet. Senior Alex Brion swept the 50 free (21.12) and 100 free (47.47), junior Ross Bernstein captured the 200 fly (1:55.55) and 400 IM (4:21.55), senior Zachary Kaplan took top honors in the 100 back (52.79) and 200 back (1:57.22), freshman Ryan Board was first in the 100 breast (59.10) and 200 breast (2:10.81) and junior Dylan Van Manen won the 500 free (4:50.79) and 1000 free (10:07.80).

While the women's squad did not race against another opponent, there were several noteworthy performances.

Sophomore Sophia Howard broke the women's program record in the one-meter diving event with a score of 284.32. That met the women's qualifying standard for the NCAA Zone Meet (265.00). In addition, freshman Amanda McGraw was second in that event and also met the NCAA Zone Meet qualifying standard with a score of 270.83.

Howard broke the previous program record of 271.00, set by Kristin Maney back in 2008. McGraw, meanwhile, broke her own freshman record of 261.75, which she set in the season-opening meet against Siena and Niagara on Oct. 20.

Because there was a judge from more than one school present at the meet, Howard and McGraw's scores are official despite the meet being an intersquad meet for the women's team. This marks the first time a Binghamton women's diver met the qualifying standard for the NCAA Zone Meet since Maney in 2008.

"I can't say enough about the job our men's and women's divers did today," Smith said. "Our diving coach Heather Colby has done a phenomenal job in recruiting and coaching them. Every meet this year, they have gotten better."

In the other noteworthy performance on the women's side, the 800 free relay team of sophomore Elizabeth Borges, sophomore Kaitlyn McCarthy, freshman Kelli O'Shea and sophomore Kaitlyn Smolar shattered the pool record with a time of 7:53.38. The old mark of 8:01.12 was set by Vermont way back in 2006.

The 800 free relay record has special meaning to Smith, who graduated from Vermont in 2007 and a member of the Catamount men's squad during his undergraduate career.

"I knew the women on that Vermont relay squad and how good they were," he said. "Our relay team broke the record by two seconds earlier in the week during practice but to go as fast as they did today was surreal. They smashed a record that was set by a tough group of swimmers."

Binghamton's men's and women's teams conclude the fall portion of their schedule with a Dec. 1 dual meet at Canisius.
