Volleyball drops four-set match at UNH

Bearcats win epic 32-30 third set but come up short; Shultz leads way with 12 kills

DURHAM, N.H. - Host New Hampshire (11-13, 7-3 America East) produced 71 kills and hit .299 as a team to defeat visiting Binghamton volleyball (4-18, 2-7 AE), 3-1 Friday night at Lundholm Gym. On its Senior Night, UNH won 25-12, 25-20, 30-32, 25-16.

The Bearcats dropped the first two sets before recording an epic 32-30 win in the third set. But the host Wildcats reclaimed the momentum midway through the fourth set to complete a season-sweep of BU.

Senior outside hitter Erin Shultz led the way with 12 kills and 10 digs and classmate Gaby Alicea collected nine kills, 12 digs and two aces. Junior hitter Victoria Keghlian had nine kills and hit .389. Sophomore libero Samantha Gioiosa had 22 digs and freshman setter Natalie Novak handed out 19 assists with 10 digs.

In the opening set, UNH used a 13-4 run to pull away early en route to a lopsided 25-12 finish. The second set was tighter and was even at 13-13 before the Wildcats tallied four straight points. Kills by Alicea, senior middle hitter Lexi LaGoy and freshman setter Kiara Adams brought BU to within one, 17-16. But UNH scored the next four points to pull away for the 25-20 margin.

The third set was a wild one. Binghamton trailed 12-4 out of the gate and were down 15-8 before mounting a furious rally. A 7-2 Bearcats run brought them to within two, 17-15, before UNH steadied itself and stretched its lead to 22-17. Three points from a three-set sweep, BU ripped off five straight points to tie the game at 22-22. The set was tied nine more times and as it extended well past regulation, BU fought off three match points. Down 30-29, Schultz put a ball away to even it at 30-30. Keghlian's kill made it 31-30 and Alicea finished off the comeback with a set-ending kill.

In the fourth, the score was knotted at 10-10 before UNH used an 11-3 run to close out the set and the match.

Binghamton continues its weekend road swing with a stop at UMass Lowell Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats, still in the thick of a battle for the fourth and final America East playoff spot, have three regular season matches remaining. Binghamton sits a half-game out of fourth place (behind Hartford) in a two-way tie with UMBC.
