Binghamton records 14-8 win over Fresno State

Box Score PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Binghamton women's lacrosse team is heading home from Philadelphia on a high riding a 14-8 win over Fresno State. The win was fueled by goals scattered across the board, featuring nine different Bearcats in the score column. A double team effort in goal by senior Emma Jehle and sophomore Taylor Passuello recorded nine saves over the course of 60 minutes.

"We are very excited to start the season off with a win," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "It was great to see the depth we've been talking about show its strength on the field in game situation. I was really excited to see how well we gelled as a team and a coaching staff on the sidelines, making in-game adjustments that helped us pull away in the second half. The girls battled for each other out there today and that's what we're all about as a program."

In a tight first half of play, Binghamton saw goals from five different players as it entered halftime with a 5-4 lead. Fresno State broke a 12 minute stand still with the first goal of the game, in which junior Ciara Gordon immediately answered on a feed from senior Skye Schumacher. The Bearcats then scored three consecutive free position goals, netted by seniors Callon Williams, Jocelyn Penteck and Tiffany Ryan. Sophomore Amelia Biancardi capitalized on a wide Binghamton shot late in the first period to score the final goal of the half, securing BU's lead.

After a rainy halftime at McCarthy Stadium, Binghamton came back on the field ready to go, as junior Rebecca Golderman slinged consecutive shots into the back of the net padding a 7-4 lead. Fresno continued to hang with the Bearcats, scoring on the next possession to pull within 7-5. Senior Jacqueline Kennedy went on to win the next draw control, netting one of two break away goals immediately following. Still chipping away, Fresno State scored three more before Binghamton took control of the final eight minutes of play.

Freshman Paige Volkmann stepped into the spotlight next, recording her first collegiate goal to put the Bearcats up 9-6. Senior Bri Arthur followed suit, scoring her first goal of the game with a BU crowd cheering behind her. The two then combined for Binghamton's 12th goal, as Volkmann picked up a wide Bearcat shot to feed Arthur for the goal. Golderman scored her third goal of the game on a free position shot before Biancardi sealed the win on a man up goal with 39 seconds left to play.

Kennedy finished the day with a game-high three caused turnovers while Golderman recorded five draw controls in the circle. Sophomore Alexa Franze picked up a team-high three ground balls.

The Bearcats return to the field for an away contest against Niagara University on Saturday, February 17. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start time.
