ARLINGTON, TX. - The Binghamton volleyball team (0-4) dropped the first match of the Maverick Classic to Loyola Maryland on Friday evening. The Greyhounds defeated the Bearcats in three sets.
Samantha Gioiosa recorded 18 digs for Binghamton while
Kiara Adams assisted on 28 points. Alicea lead the Bearcats with 13 kills, she also contributed 9 digs.
Loyola claimed all three sets winning 25-23, 25-21 and 25-11.
The Bearcats and the Greyhounds went back and forth in the first set until both teams were knotted at 20. Kills from
Erin Shultz and
Tyra Wilson gave Binghatmon a 22-20 lead. After a Loyola timeout, Binghamton increased their lead to three on a kill from
Gaby Alicea. But, the Greyhounds did not back down. Loyola scored the final five points and claimed the match 25-23.
Loyola jumped out to an early lead and maintained the lead for the entire set in the second. Binghamton battled back late in the set to come within two points at 21-23, but the Greyhounds scored the final two points on Binghamton attacking errors to win the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Greyhounds again took an early lead in the third and the Bearcats couldn't find an answer. Loyola won the set 25-11 and took the match 3-0.
Binghamton is back in action for two matches tomorrow. The first match against Air Force is slated for a noon (EST) start and the final match of the tournament featuring Binghamtonn and UT Arlington is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (EST).
