Volleyball drops a pair of matches Saturday

Bearcats fall to Air Force and UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, TX. - The Binghamton volleyball team (0-6) dropped two matches at the Maverick Classic on Saturday. The Bearcats were defeated by Air Force 3-0 and by UT Arlington 3-0.

Sophomore defensive specialist Samantha Gioiosa was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament.

In the first match of the day, Binghamton fell to Air Force 3-0. The Falcons won the first set 25-19, the second 25-14 and the final 25-21.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first set. After an Air Force timeout, the Falcons came out firing scoring the next four points to tie the score. It was a back and forth battle until the end of the set when Arlington won on two Binghamton errors.

Binghamton had no match for Air Force's power in the second set and Falcons claimed the set 25-14.

Arlington won the third set 25-21 and took the match 3-0.

Erin Shultz lead the Bearcats with 9 kills and 6 digs. Natalie Novak and Kiara Adams each recorded 11 assists. Novak also added 12 digs.

Arlington topped Binghamton in three sets Ā (25-22, 25-16 and 25-16) in the second set of the day. Ā 

It was a back and forth battle between the Bearcats and the Mavericks early in the first set. Arlington was able to take a 22-17 lead but Binghamton scored on two Arlington errors to come back with in three. But, the Mavericks capitalized on three straight kills claimed the first set.

Arlington got out to early leads in both the second and third set and never looked back. The Mavericks won the final two sets 25-16 and 25-16 to win the match 3-0.

Shultz once again lead Binghamton with 9 kills and 13 digs. Alicea added 7 kills and 8 digs while Samantha Gioiosa posted 15 digs.

The Bearcats travel to University of Wyoming next weekend for the Wyoming Invitational. Binghamton will kickoff the tournament with a match against hosts Wyoming at noon on Friday.
