Volleyball splits at Sacred Heart Invitational

Bearcats top NJIT but fall to Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, CT. - The Binghamton volleyball team (2-11) won one match and lost one at the Sacred Heart Hampton Inn Invitational on Saturday. The Bearcat fell to hosts Sacred Heart 3-1 in the morning and topped NJIT 3-0 in the afternoon.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Gaby Alicea and Lexi LaGoy were named to the All Tournament Team.

Binghamton topped Sacred Heart in the first match 26-24 and then dropped the final three 25-17, 25-18 and 25-21.

The Pioneers got out to an early lead in the first game, but Binghamton was able to battle back and win the set 26-24 on a kill from Gaby Alicea.

Binghamton hung strong in the final three sets but the Bearcats weren't able to hold on and Sacred Heart won the match 3-1.

Lexi LaGoy lead the Bearcats with 12 kills while Gaby Alicea added 11 kills and 12 digs. Kiara Adams posted 35 assists.

In the second match of the day, Binghamton topped NJIT in three sets. The Bearcats won the first set 25-14, the second 25-22 and the final 25-21.

The Bearcats got out to an early 18-7 lead in the first set and held on to win the game 25-14.

Both teams battled back and forth in the second set until Binghamton was able to claim a 24-22 lead. The Bearcats scored the final point of the set on an Alicea kill.

In the final set both teams fought to a 19-19 tie. Binghamton scored three straight points on NJIT errors and one service ace by Gaby Alicea. NJIT scored the next two points before Binghamton was able to claim the set and the match on a kill from Erin Shultz.
 
Shultz lead the Bearcats with 13 kills and six digs while Alicea posted 10 kills and 16 digs.

Binghamton kicks off conference play next Friday when they travel to UMBC for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Retrievers.
