Volleyball defeats UMBC in AE opener

Bearcats defeat the Retrievers 3-2 for first conference win of 2018

BALTIMORE, MD. - The Binghamton volleyball team (3-11, 1-0 AE) defeated UMBC (3-11, 0-1 AE) in five sets on Friday night at the Event Center on UMBC's campus. The America East matchup marked the first conference game for both teams.

Binghamton claimed the first two sets 25-20 and 25-21, UMBC took the third 25-21 and the fourth 25-19 before Binghamton claimed the match with a 15-13 final set win.

Gaby Alicea lead Binghamton with 15 kills and 18 digs while Erin Shultz added 11 kills and 14 digs. Samantha Gioiosa posted 19 digs and freshman Kiara Adams recorded a new career-high 38 assists.

It was a back and forth battle in the first set until Binghamton was able to jump out to 23-19 lead. The Bearcats scored on a UMBC error and sealed the set on a kill from Shultz.

Binghamton got out to an early lead in the second set. The Bearcats maintained the lead and once again won the set on a kill by Shultz.

UMBC hung tough winning the third and fourth to send the match into a fifth set.

Binghamton didn't let UMBC use their momentum in the final set as the Bearcats got out to an early 3-0 lead. UMBC fought back and took a 12-10 lead late in the game but BU tied the set at 12 on a kill from Shultz and a Retrievers' error. UMBC then posted another kill to take a 13-12 lead, but Victoria Keghlian answered for the Bearcats' tying the score again at 13 on a kill. Binghamton them claimed the set and the match on a kill from Shultz and an attacking error by UMBC.

Binghamton is back in action next Friday when they travel to Albany for another America East matchup.
