The Binghamton volleyball team fell to Stony Brook in straight sets Friday evening. The Bearcats led most of the way in the first set, but lost a few crucial points and went on to drop the matchup 25-23, 25-18, 25-14.
Francela Ulate led the way with eight kills, followed by seven from
Anna Sprys. Sprys impressed in this one, recording a .500 hitting percentage and adding four blocks.
Kim Lavender had 12 digs for the Bearcats, who did better defensively and were able to put away some long rallies early on.
The first set saw the Sea Wolves take an early lead, but a 7-0 Bearcat run made an 11-7 deficit turn into a 14-11 advantage. The lead was maintained until the late stages of the set, when Stony Brook was able to knot it up at 20. The set remained tied at 23, but the Sea Wolves scored the final two points to gain momentum and a one set to zero lead.
Binghamton remained sharp in the second set, scoring five of the first six points, highlighted by strong play from
Victoria Keghlian. The Sea Wolves fought back with two strong runs to retake the lead. A kill by Sprys and a block by Keghlian kept the team in it, but Stony Brook ran away with the second set, scoring seven of the last 10 points.
The final set was taken wire-to-wire by the Sea Wolves, as they opened up a large lead early on. A Stony Brook attack error capped a run by Binghamton at 9-8, but that was as close as the team would get to the lead. A kill by
Audrey Haworth was the team's final point of the match before Stony Brook scored the final five.
The Bearcats have a quick turnaround, and will take on Hartford Sunday at 1 p.m.
