Bearcat men’s and women’s teams both finish fifth

ALBANY, N.Y. – Sophomore Aziza Chigatayeva, senior Jessica Cueva-Scarpelli and freshman Ryan Guerci were each named all-conference, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the America East Cross Country Championships, which were held on Saturday morning at Albany. In the team standings the Bearcat men's and women's squads both placed fifth out of nine teams.

Chigatayeva placed fourth overall in the women's 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:04.95. In the process, she earned first-team all-conference honors (which was awarded to places 1-7) for the second year in a row.

Cueva-Scarpelli was 12th overall with a time of 17:41. She was named second-team all-conference (awarded to places 8-14). It marks the first time in her career that Cueva Scarpelli has been named all-conference in cross country.

The two all-conference selections represent the most for the Binghamton women's team since 2005, when Katie Radzik and Stacy Kramer was honored. In addition, Chigatayeva is now the third Bearcat women's runner to be named America East all-conference twice in her career, joining Radzik (2005 and 2006) and Kramer (2004 and 2005).

Guerci, meanwhile, was 14th overall in the men's 8,000-meter race, clocking a time of 24:30. In the process, he becomes the first Binghamton men's freshman to be named all-conference since Jeff Martinez finished 10th in 2009.

Elsewhere on the women's side, junior Emily Mackay was 38th (18:46), sophomore Hannah Melino was 39th (18:47) and freshman Kyra Guerci was 56th (19:06).

Hannah Reinhardt of Albany was the repeat individual champion in the women's meet with a course-record time of 16:45. She finished 10 seconds ahead of the other 86 runners.

New Hampshire won the women's team title with 30 points. The Wildcats were followed by Vermont (54), Stony Brook (105), Albany (132) and Binghamton (134).

Freshman Matt Cavaliere was the Bearcat men's second finisher, placing 28th overall with a time of 24:58. Rounding out the top five for Binghamton were freshman Marty Dolan in 29th place (25:01), senior Daryn Hutchings in 35th place (25:12) and senior Mitch Halpern in 43rd place (25:22).

Christopher Alfond of UMass Lowell was the men's individual winner, recording a time of 23:38 in the process. He finished four seconds clear of the other 83 finishers.

Stony Brook won the men's team with just 22 points. UMass Lowell was second (54), followed by Vermont (75), New Hampshire (95) and Binghamton (137).

Binghamton heads to the NCAA Northeast Region Meet on Nov. 15 at Buffalo.
