MEN'S SOCCER DAILY UPDATE (as of November 9)

| By:

Our 12th year of blogging our way through the Bearcats' season

NOVEMBER 9, 2019

Thank You

Of all the posts of the Men's Soccer Daily Update, this one is always the toughest to write. It's the one that signifies the end of the Bearcats' season.

I want to thank Coach Marco and all of the players who have been so gracious with their time this season. This is the 12th year of the Men's Soccer Daily Update and the stories that I have uncovered through it have been continue to amaze me.

Special thanks goes to our graduating seniors Stephen McKenna and Haris Brkovic.

The Pipe Dream has been great with their coverage of us this year and who can forget Roger Neel with all of the phone interviews with Coach Marco – in addition to the in-studio visits during preseason and homecoming.

After two years of missing the playoffs, it came back to me these past four weeks just how great a late-season run was. With a young team returning next year, there figure to be more moments like that in the future.

So until next year, thank you for your readership, your feedback and your support.

God Bless,
David O'Brian

Top 5 List: AE Quarterfinal Games

First things first – if you have yet to see it, click here for the Sportscenter Top Play highlight of Andrew McDonnell's game-winning goal against Albany on Thursday.

Congrats to both Andrew and Ryan Pyszka on their well-deserved recognition.

Now – on to the quarterfinals.

Binghamton has played in 10 America East quarterfinal matches, dating back to 2004. Three of them have been decided by a penalty kick shootout – with the Bearcats winning all three of them.

While this won't appear on SportsCenter, here is our Top 5 List of Binghamton's America East quarterfinal games.

5. 2014

Binghamton and Stony Brook played to a 1-1 draw at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats won the decisive shootout 4-3 in six rounds. Tucker Sandercock forced overtime by deadlocking the game at 1-1 in the 79th minute. Robert Moewes made three saves in the shootout.

4. 2005

Binghamton and Boston University played to a 1-1 tie with the Bearcats winning the shootout 5-4. Joey Neilson scored a first-half goal and Ryan Bertoni made the key save in the shootout.

3. 2004

After Binghamton and New Hampshire played to a scoreless tie, Stefan Gonet took over. In the fifth round of the shootout, he scored a goal and made a save to help the Bearcats advance.

2. 2008

Cameron Keith had a goal and two assists, powering Binghamton to a 3-1 victory over New Hampshire.

1.      2015

Down 2-0 to Stony Brook with 15 minutes left in regulation, Binghamton stormed back to win 3-2 in overtime. Pascal Trappe netted the game-winning goal in the first sudden-death period.

Of those five matches, four of them were at home and Binghamton advanced to the finals four times. One more note – of the Bearcats' 10 quarterfinal games, six of them have gone into overtime.

With all that in mind, 2019 is on the clock.

Albany Wrap Up

Binghamton didn't just back into the America East Tournament. Instead, it went in through the front door, courtesy of its 1-0 win over Albany in the final home match of the year.

Plenty to go over from this one:

Finally

With the exception of Stephen McKenna, no upperclassman on the Bearcat roster has competed in an America East Tournament game. That will change on Saturday, which has many of the veterans elated.

"I am very delighted to go to the playoffs finally," Noah Luescher said. "I was devastated the last two years not to go to the playoffs but now we feel that we can compete with anyone. We are buzzing for Saturday and excited to go to Hartford."

"It's pretty exciting," Chris Stamper said. "It's a good feeling to finally get into the playoffs. Everybody is in a good mood and is excited to keep playing."

"It felt really good tonight to go into the playoffs with a win," Ryan Pyszka said. "I especially happy for our seniors Stephen McKenna and Haris Brkovic that they can keep playing."

Getting into the playoffs was satisfying, but getting the momentum with the win over Albany was a definite bonus.

"We really wanted to get after it tonight," Stamper said. "We want the result – especially against Albany. To end the regular season with a win means a lot to us."

Home Sweet Home

Binghamton will be on the road for the playoffs but it closed out the year with its best home record since 2009. The Bearcats went 5-2-1 at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

"We are proud of our record at home this year," Stamper said. "As a defender, I wanted to keep the clean sheet tonight at home and we were able to do that for our second home game in a row."

"At home, we like to keep a clean sheet and lock down in the backfield," Andrew McDonnell said. "We just don't like to concede goals at home."

Top Play

This morning, we get a pair of text messages with the word that McDonnell's goal landed as Top Play No. 6. We did some digging and are getting the clip from ESPN as we speak.

Press Clippings

Click here for the Pipe Dream's recap of the win over Albany.

Speaking of the Pipe Dream, last night's writer was Assistant Sports Editor Ed Aaron. He was a substitute writer. At the post-game press conference, Aaron informed Coach Marco that the only other men's soccer game he covered was the 2-1 win over No. 25 New Hampshire at the 2018 Family Weekend game. Clearly, he brings a good omen to the team – so perhaps we should send him to Hartford on Saturday.

On the Menu

With the close of the home schedule was the final home tailgate. Besides Nirchi's Pizza, there was good breaded chicken and pasta as well as plenty of desserts following the victory last night.

A big thank you to all of the families for their hospitality after home matches this year.

They're In!

Binghamton is in the America East playoffs for the first time since 2016. Unlike the previous two seasons, the Bearcats enter the regular-season finale against Albany with the assurance that they will play on.

"To get back to the playoffs is huge," Stephen McKenna said. "It's awesome that we have extended our season for at least one more game and we are going to work hard to make a deep run in the playoffs."

McKenna is the only Bearcat player remaining from that 2016 squad. Binghamton's other graduating senior – Haris Brkovic – transferred prior to the 2016 campaign.

Safe at Home

Binghamton currently has a record of 4-2-1 at the Bearcats Sports Complex this season. It is their best home record since finishing the 2009 season with a 6-1-1 mark.

Speaking of the 2009 season, the Binghamton win at home over Albany was a 2-1 overtime decision on Oct. 7, 2009. Jason Stenta saved a penalty kick in the first sudden-death period and moments later, Adam Whitehead won the match on a free kick.

Odds and Ends Before Hartford

This morning, the team will board a bus for its trip to Hartford. Before sending them off, however, here are some things worth noting.

What A Difference a Year Makes

Last year, the Bearcats didn't play a match in November. They lost 3-0 at Albany on Halloween night in the final regular-season game of the year. It was their seventh straight loss as well as their fifth consecutive conference setback.

This year, Halloween is not the end of the Bearcats' season. Far from it. Granted the regular-season schedule ends a year later (with the final match coming on Nov.6). But Binghamton is unbeaten in its last four matches and is 3-1-2 in its last six outings.

Binghamton is clearly playing its best soccer of the season, which bodes well heading into November – a month it didn't even play a match last year.

What A Difference Three Weeks Makes

Three weeks ago, we got to know Oliver Svalander during our feature story interview with him. There was no question that his contribution to the team was appreciated and his talent was recognized. But he was obviously frustrated that he had yet to score. As someone who loved his new teammates, he wanted to contribute on the scoreboard.

Well…

In the past four matches, Svalander has three goals and an assist. He was named the America East Rookie of the Week last week. And the Bearcats are unbeaten during that run.

"Oliver continues to come into his own," head coach Paul Marco said after Tuesday night's match at Hofstra. "He is becoming the player we thought he could be for us."

Now About That Cap....

Speaking of Svalander, he showed up for his interview with us wearing a blue hat with a curly W on it. He insisted it had nothing to do with the Washington Nationals. He bought it back home in Sweden. Still, his teammates -- being mostly Yankee fans -- teased him about it.

Let the teasing stop.

Last night the Washington Nationals won the World Series for the first time in franchise history.

Press Clippings

This Day in Binghamton Men's Soccer History: November 1, 2006

Speaking of significant matches in November, the Bearcats advanced to their fourth consecutive America East title game with an epic shootout victory over Boston University in the conference semifinals.

Played at the old West Gym Field, the Bearcats and Terriers battled to a 1-1 draw and a 5-5 draw in the first round of the shootout. Kyle Kurcharski converted his attempt in the top of the sixth frame and Jason Stenta made perhaps the most memorable save of his career in the bottom of the sixth frame.

Thoughts from the Bus

We caught up with the Bearcats on the bus ride home from Hofstra last night following their 2-2 tie against the Pride. Overall, they remain pleased with the direction of the team, that is now unbeaten in their last four matches.

Noah Luescher

"Thi team has grown a lot over the past couple of weeks. We don't give away games anymore and fight for each other every game. The effort and grit the team shows is outstanding. We still need to gain more experience and start doing the right thing at the right time. But all together, we look good and the future looks bright."

Stephen McKenna

"The guys are really maturing as the season goes on. The young guys are showing a lot of growth in games and are showing their quality more and more."

Haris Brkovic

"Overall, the team has been playing much better. The effort and energy of the entire team has increased and it is definitely showing on the field. A lot of the guys are still young, so it shows sometimes in the beginning of matches. But other than that, we are getting better every day."

OCTOBER 28, 2019

Hello Again

It was obviously a special night for Dan Mansfield as he scored the game-winning goal on Saturday night against UMBC. But what made it even more memorable for him was a certain Bearcat alum sitting with his family in the stands.

Jake Keegan remains one of Binghamton's most accomplished players during the program's 19-year NCAA Division I era. He scored 28 goals during his career, including 11 in his senior year (2012). Keegan was named both all-conference and all-region in 2012.

Since graduating from Binghamton, Keegan has played professionally in both North America and Ireland. This past year, he played in Greenville (S.C.).

On Saturday, Keegan returned to campus for a visit and to watch the Bearcats face the Retrievers. He said that he planned on sitting with Dan Mansfield's family, having known them during his career at Binghamton.

"I've known the Mansfield family since Dan was little," Keegan said. "It's great to see him all grown up and playing for the Bearcats."

"I've known Jake for as long as I can remember," Mansfield said. "He's best friends with my sister and they went to high school together."

Mansfield watched Keegan star at John Jay High School (in Stormville, N.Y.). Since he started playing soccer at a young age, Keegan was someone he looked up to.

"Jake has always been someone I've looked up to," Mansfield said. "I can remember watching him dominate in high school. Off the field, he is the nicest person ever and so humble. He is someone I aspire to be like."

Mansfield is off to a good start in his freshman season. The goal against UMBC was his second of the season.

"I was really happy for Dan," Keegan said afterwards. "It was great to see him score such a big goal in an important conference game."

"It was really special having him there," Mansfield said. "I haven't seen him in about 10 years. It was really cool having him watch me play because in the past, it was always the other way around."

For the Record

The past two Octobers did not go well for the Binghamton men's soccer team. They dropped all seven of their matches last year and final five decisions in 2017.

It is against that backdrop that the Bearcats' 3-1-1 run in their last five matches – all in October – is significant. The team appears to be coming together at just the right time.

On the Menu

We were too busy wrapping up the coverage from Saturday's victory to make the postgame tailgate. We did hear, however, that Peter Muller brought his Old Bay seasoned chicken wings from Maryland.

We are sure they went quick.

Senior Spotlight: Haris Brkovic

Haris Brkvoic has been right at home staying at home.

After being named All-Region at nearby Johnson City High School, he began his college career at nearby Broome Community College. After being named a JUCO Division III All-American, Brkovic knew where he wanted to compete at the next level.

"Being a local and playing local soccer was a big factor for me," he said. "Staying home was what I wanted to do, so Binghamton was a great fit for me. It had a Division I soccer program and great academics as well."

When Brkovic arrived at Binghamton in 2017, the roster was filled with players with whom he played against in high school. Vestal High School and Owego Free Academy were two of Johnson City's rivals. Ironically, Brkovic and his rival players got to know each other well before coming to Binghamton. That made the transition a smooth one.

"I got to get close to the guys who played on rival high school teams before I got here," he said. "It made the bond we have at Binghamton even stronger.  It's been great playing with them. Having strong chemistry with them since day one made me a bit more comfortable when I joined the rest of the team."

It didn't take long for Brkovic to record a signature game. In his sophomore year, he scored twice in the Bearcats' 5-1 win at Canisius.

"That was a good game for me," he said. "When I first started to warm up on the sideline, I was just very excited to go in. I was ready to give it my all and I wound up scoring two very important goals and we got the win."

Looking back, Brkovic feels he has definitely improved as a player.

"Overall, I've become more of a calm player," he said. "More calm on the ball. Also, my finishing has improved as I am a striker and my awareness has gotten better on and off the ball. I am also more aware of where my teammates are during the run of play."

In addition, Brkovic has no doubt that he has grown as a person since coming to Binghamton.

"I have definitely become more disciplined," he said. "I have become a better listeners and have learned to lead over the years. From my first year to just listening and following the elders, to my senior year and leading the younger guys, I have definitely grown."

Victory on Long Island

Plenty to go over from the Bearcats' dramatic 3-2 win at Stony Brook. We start with some thoughts from the guys on the bus ride home:

Stephen McKenna

"Just a great comeback victory. It's obviously difficult to come back from being down 2-0 but this group battled back and scored three great goals. Oliver and Noah were terrific in helping us get those goals back."

Noah Luescher

"It was a tough first half. We really didn't find our rhythm and weren't able to connect on many passes. Down 2-0 at the half is tough but this group showed heart and character and I am extremely proud of all of them. It was a step in the right direction, which is exciting going forward."

Oliver Svalander

"We had a completely different attitude in the second half which was a big factor in our win tonight. We have to be more confident in the future right from the start of the match."

Press Clippings

Click here for the Pipe Dream's Recap of Saturday's win at Stony Brook.

Alumni Sighting

Keith Augeri, who played on the 1999-02 teams, was in the stands at Stony Brook on Saturday night. He brought his high school team with him and was impressed with the Bearcats' comeback.

"It was frustrating in the first half but in the second half, our guys came out with a lot more energy, pinned Stony Brook back and scored some really nice goals," he said. "I thought Noah, Oliver and Lucas (Arzan) were outstanding in the second half."

Social Media Update

Déjà vu?

The last time Binghamton rallied from two goals down to win was – you guessed it – at Stony Brook. It took place in the 2015 America East quarterfinals. Pascal Trappe scored the game-winning goal in overtime.

This Day in Binghamton Men's Soccer History: October 21, 2006

In the best tie in program history, Binghamton played to a 0-0 tie against Vermont – which was all they needed to clinch their first-ever America East regular-season title.

Two weeks later, Binghamton beat Vermont 1-0 to complete the double.

That match also marked the Bearcats' Senior Day – for Bryan Arnault, Joey Neilson, Ibrahim Yusuf, Ryan Bertoni, Pete Sgueglia and Kyle Antos.

Off to Stony Brook

Head coach Paul Marco was on the WNBF Morning Show to talk about the match tomorrow against Stony Brook. Here were some of his quotes:

"Stony Brook has had some very tight games and some good competition. They will play a 4-4-2 formation unless they change what they have done in the past."

"We have a bunch of Long Island guys who are looking forward to going home. It should be a good match."

"Our guys were fresh yesterday and training and we have had a good week of preparation for the match."

"We are almost fully healthy. We are still missing two of the guys but we are in pretty good shape heading into the match."

"The conference has been unbelievable this year. I thought we would have a few teams nationally ranked. UNH has been outstanding. I wouldn't be surprised if they are in the Top 10 the rest of the year."

By The Numbers

Noah Luescher of Binghamton and Jared Dass of Stony Brook have been two of the top offensive players in the America East this season.

Dass is ranked third in the America East with 0.42 goals per game and sixth with 0.83 points per game. Luescher is fifth with 0.40 goals per game and fifth with 0.90 points per game. Luescher is also third in the conference with 2.40 shots per game.

This Day in Binghamton Men's Soccer History: October 18, 2006

Joey Neilson hadn't scored a goal all year – but his second-half goal at Albany lifted Binghamton to a 1-0 victory. The win vaulted the Bearcats to first place in the America East Conference.

The Series vs. Stony Brook

Binghamton and Stony Brook joined the America East Conference in time for the 2002 men's soccer season. Since then, the Bearcats and Seawolves have squared off in several memorable matches. We tried to rank our top five matches from that 17-year stretch.

For the record, Binghamton leads the America East era series against Stony Brook 9-7-5.

5. 2005 America East Finals – Stony Brook 1, Binghamton 1. Stony Brook wins SO 4-2

OK, it was a loss. But still, it was in the America East title game. Kyle Antos scored in the first half for the Bearcats but Stony Brook got the equalizer with just 3:30 left in regulation.

This marked the third straight year Binghamton advanced to the America East title game.

4. Oct. 23, 2002. Binghamton 3, Stony Brook 1

Graham Munro converted a pair of penalty kicks as the Bearcats won on Senior Day at the old West Gym Field.

3. 2014 America East Quarterfinals. – Binghamton 1, Stony Brook 1. Binghamton wins SO 4-3 in 6 rounds.

In the first playoff game at the Bearcats Sports Complex in four years, Binghamton rallied late in the second half to tie the match at 1-1. Tucker Sandercock netted the equalizer. In the decisive shootout, Robert Moewes stopped three penalty kicks.

2. 2015 America East Quarterfinals – Binghamton 3, Stony Brook 2 - OT

The rally against Stony Brook in 2014 was impressive. But coming back from two goals down a year later was even more so. The Bearcats scored twice in the final 13 minutes of regulation. Pascal Trappe then ended the match in overtime.

1. November 3, 2007.  Binghamton 1, Stony Brook 0

At a rain-drenched LaValle Stadium, Barry Neville converted a free kick in the 44th minute, lifting Binghamton to a 1-0 win in its final regular-season game. The victory clichéd the Bearcats' second consecutive America East regular-season title.

OCTOBER 15, 2019

Making Himself at Home

Oliver Svalander arrived at the Events Center late Monday afternoon. He was heading down to the locker room to get ready for training and was wearing a baseball cap with a curly "W."

The hat was eerily similar to that of the Washington Nationals baseball team – a club that is currently on the brink of reaching the World Series. As a freshman from Sweden, Svalander has generated a lot of attention from his teammates with his choice of cap. Still, he insists it has nothing to do with the Nationals.

"I got it from a hat store back home in Sweden," he said. "It had nothing to do with the Nationals or with baseball but the guys on the team have been joking with me about it."

Svalander may not be into Major League baseball yet but he has definitely adjusted to playing college soccer. He has become a consistent starter in his rookie season at Binghamton and has played in multiple positions.

To hear Svalander talk, however, it is evident that he has done much to improve his game since he arrived here in August.

"The time you have on the ball is less here," he said. "In Sweden, I had more time on the ball, which was easier. I have had to push myself here to be more aware and know where everyone is at. I have to think a lot before I get the ball. I have to be three steps ahead when I get the ball, which has improved my style as a player."

Svalander has been impressed with more than just the high level of soccer within the Binghamton program.

"Academics is the only thing we talk about besides soccer," he said. "The coaches are always asking us how things are going. When we do something good or bad, the coaches hope to hear it from us first. Even if it's good news, they like us to stay in touch."

Svalander has gotten to know head coach Paul Marco well since he arrived on campus. He has seen firsthand how the longtime coach values the team for who they are as people.

"Coach Marco cares a lot about us." he said. "Not just on the field and with academics. If we have a problem with anything, he wants us to contact him first. He's been like an extra father."

In addition to Coach Marco and his staff, captains Stephen McKenna and Noah Luescher have also played a huge role in Svalander adjusting to life at Binghamton.

"Stephen and Noah have helped me out so much," he said. "Two months before I got here, they texted me on Instagram and wanted to have a conversation with me. Noah is also a foreigner (from Switzerland), so he understands what it's like getting adjusted. The first day I was here, he took me to Oakdale Mall to get a phone set up. Stephen is always giving us inspirational talks before the game – something the captains don't do as much back in Sweden."

Svalander said he already has a lot of good memories from his short time at Binghamton. But the season-opening overtime win over Drexel on August 30 is at the top of that list.

"It was exceptional," he said. "I get goosebumps now just talking about. The feeling to be on that pitch when we won was great. The crowd and everyone cheering was memorable."

Another significant moment for Svalander was the Homecoming match against Monmouth on Sept. 21. The large crowd, pregame tailgate and festive environment on campus blew him away.

"The whole atmosphere on Homecoming was crazy," he said. "I enjoyed it very much. My girlfriend was also in town that weekend, which was nice."

Svalander also looks forward to the post-game tailgates following the Bearcats' home matches.

"It's great to get to the tailgates after our games," he said. "There isn't just one choice of food. There is a lot to pick from. I like the cookies best of all. But those (Old Bay) chicken wings are the best I've ever had."

This Day in Binghamton Men's Soccer History: October 15, 2008

Binghamton beats Hartford 1-0 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Justin Leskow scored the game-winning goal and followed up with an even more memorable quote.

"Some may call it a world class goal," he deadpanned. "Some may not. But nevertheless, the ball found its way into the back of the net and we won 1-0."

Making His Mark

A year ago, P.J. Parker was the newcomer among a veteran group of goalkeepers. This year, he is the elder statesman of a trio that includes freshman Ryan McGovern and Mats Roorda.

Parker started the year as the backup to Roorda. When Roorda suffered an injury, it opened the door for Parker to take over the starting slot.

"It's always great to play," he said. "It's also a great feeling when the team has confidence in you. Their confidence in me helps me feel confident out on the field."

The greatest feeling Parker had playing this year was the 2-1 win over Columbia last Tuesday. He made a key save from close range in the final minutes of regulation to preserve the victory.

"It felt good to contribute to the success of the team," he said. "I think I speak for the team when I say we love to win. We train hard and hold each other to a high standard every day. We expect to win against every opponent and we came out against a good Columbia side and gained a much needed victory."

Roorda returned to the starting role against Vermont this past weekend but Parker has continued to work hard and improve. He views the chemistry between the three goalkeepers as a strength.

"Being a goalkeeper at this level is difficult," he said. "Often, only one gets to see the field. It would seem natural to simply not like the guy who is higher than you on the depth chart but with us it's different. Mats, Ryan and I all go out every day and each train like we're the starter. Whoever's called upon come game time knows that the other two are hoping for his success. We genuinely like one another."

Training the three goalkeepers has been assistant coach Rob Emmett. A former collegiate goalkeeper himself, he has been appreciated by Parker for his role in the program.

"It's been great to have a dedicated goalie coach like Rob," he said. "He goes above and beyond every day, whether it's staying after sessions to work on kicking or sending clips of film with verbal critique. He has been crucial to my development and it's been great working with him."

Parker has found his way at Binghamton not just on the field – but off it. Last spring, he was inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society for his work in the classroom. Without question, the adjustment he has made at Binghamton has been seamless.

"The team has been great to me since day one," he said. "I always tell people when they ask me about how I adjusted socially from high school to college that I gained 27 new friends when I came here. You spend so much time with each other that you become closer than you were with many of your friends from high school. We're like a family and I'm lucky to be able to play the game that I love with people that I love."

Heading to Vermont

We caught up with some of the players to get their thoughts on the mood of the team – after Tuesday's win over Columbia and prior to tomorrow night's match at Vermont.

Chris Stamper

"Getting that win against Columbia has definitely helped out everyone's mood heading into the match against Vermont. You could tell in training since then"

"Without a doubt we have confidence with whoever is playing in goal for us. At the end of the day, everyone is one the same team. We are going to give everyone confidence when they are playing."

"It takes mental strength and determination to hold on to a lead for 60 minutes like we did on Tuesday. Especially against a good team like Columbia."

Stephen McKenna

"I thought we had put together a couple of fine performances before Columbia and to finally get rewarded with a win was huge – especially going into our match against Vermont."

"P.J. Parker is a really good goalkeeper just like Mats Roorda is. We have full faith in both of them and it was a really smooth transition to P.J. playing."

Columbia Recap

It took six tries since 2013 but the Bearcats finally were able to record a win over Columbia. Plenty to go over from this one.

The Drought Ends

Binghamton had been held scoreless for 310 minutes before Homler scored in the 29th minute. Two minutes later, he netted his second goal in as many minutes.

Scouting Report

Homler's first goal was unassisted but a tip given by head coach Paul Marco during the pre-game scout stayed in his mind.

"Coach Marco told us that their goalkeeper sometimes comes out of the net and to be ready to take advantage of that," he said. "I remember what he said and it was great to get the goal."

Oh Brother

Pipe Dream reporter Lance Kim played an interesting role in the game.

After Homler's first goal, a fan opened the door to the press box where Kim was sitting. When he was asked who scored the goals, Kim said that Ethan got both of them.

"Oh, that's my brother," the fan said.

Kim brought that up during the post-game interviews.

"I saw my brother in the stands," Homler said. "He actually goes here. It's great to see your family in the stands and I love having their support."

Great Timing

On our game day graphic today, we put Homler as the player, unaware of how good of a match he would have. We asked him during the interviews if that had anything to do with his success against Columbia and if we should post it again

"I saw it this morning," he said. "Absolutely post another one."

A Great Visit

Noah Luescher was not only pleased with the victory, but was also grateful for the week he had with his family, which visited from his native Switzerland.

"I had a great week," he said. "My family left on Sunday and I miss them already. But we did a lot together and they even got to go to New York City on a day when I was busy. Their support means so much to me."

On The Menu

Wegman's subs and pizza were the staples at the post-game tailgate but the players had to be prodded by their parents to finish them. Seems like the match might have taken something out of their appetites.

Speaking of Food

Peter Muller's Old Bay Wings were back for Saturday's postgame tailgate following the UMass Lowell match. They were so popular that there were none left for this blogger.

Welcomed Guests

Binghamton had seven days off between their matches against New Hampshire and Lowell but it was an eventful week for Noah Luescher. His family made their annual fall trip from Switzerland to visit him and were on hand for Saturday's home match against the River Hawks.

The Lueschers sat in the front rows at midfield during the game against UMass Lowell. They came with the same Swiss flag they brought to the Family Weekend game last year.

"We spent a lot of time with Noah this week," his father Urs said. "It was great for him and it was great for us. We are a close family and we have to stick together."

This was actually the second visit the Lueschers have made to the United States to visit Noah this year. During the summer, they traveled to Des Moines when he was playing for the Premier Development League (PDL) team in that city (the Menace).

"It was a long year for Noah," Urs said. "He wasn't able to come home during the summer so we went and watched him play in a pair of matches."

The Lueschers took advantage of the many restaurants in downtown Binghamton. This is their third year that they came to visit Noah and they have their favorite spots.

"We went to dinner a few times," Urs said. "We like The Colonial the best. But this year we decided to go to Texas Road House across the street."

When the Lueschers are back in Switzerland, they watch all of Noah's games on the live video feed. The time difference, however, means that the matches start in the middle of the night.

"We watch every game at home," Urs said. "Even if it starts at 1 or 2 in the morning."

Urs and the rest of the family watched Noah score the overtime goal against Drexel back on August 30. It was three in the morning back in Switzerland when the winning goal was scored.

"We were very happy and we cheering for him," Urs said. "Because we live so far out in the country, we have no neighbors to worry about waking up during the matches."

More on the Lueschers

We have posted multiple articles about Noah and his family the past year, click here for the article about their 2018 Family Weekend visit and here for a feature article on Noah that was written over the summer.

SEPTEMBER 30, 2019

Quite a Flip

For the past decade, the Binghamton Men's Soccer Team has had a traditions for anyone who has celebrated a birthday. The team gathers around the birthday celebrant and tosses them into the air three times.

According to head coach Paul Marco, the flip was generated during "one of the fernufels in training one day."

Fernufel was the word coined up by Justin Leskow for a scramble for a loose ball in the box.

Ever since then, the birthday flip has become a staple for the Bearcat program. Last week, assistant coach Rob Emmett was the recipient of the birthday flip.

Throughout the years, yours truly has had some memorable birthday flips.

In 2010, I was in the middle of interviewing Coach Marco when then assistant coach Joe Dorini grabbed my microphone and the team proceeded to flip me in the air.

In 2012, after the men's soccer team beat New Hampshire in overtime, I told Coach Marco who I needed for interviews. He told me that the team needed me first and they proceeded to do the flip. Marts Reid-Warden then took my recorder and interviewed me about the flip.

In 2014, the flip was administered to me during a training session and then I was drenched by the ice bucket – as a tribute to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. I did not have a change of clothes.

In 2016, it was Homecoming Weekend and I was coming down to interview the alums for the Daily Update. Let's just say that they were still fit enough to flip me in the air.

Last year, however, was the most unusual instance. I told the team before they faced then nationally-ranked New Hampshire that if they won, they can do whatever they wanted to me in honor of my birthday. Well, they kept up their end of the bargain with their 2-1 win and Kevin Flesch skipped the birthday flip and just nailed me with the ice bucket. Once again, I did not have a change of clothes.

As you probably figured out – today is my birthday and while I won't see the team until training tomorrow, I am prepared to go airborne when they remember the event.

The men's soccer team has embraced not just the players and coaches, but the support staffers such as myself who work with them. I'm proud to be part of that program….even if I do need a change of clothes once a year.

Top 5 List: Binghamton vs. New Hampshire

When it comes to the men's soccer team's rivals since joining the America East, the first names to come to mind are Vermont and Boston University (which left the conference in 2012). New Hampshire, however, has played Binghamton in quite a few memorable matches during that same stretch. In fact, the Wildcats have been under the radar in terms of being a historical rival.

So while the current men's soccer team is traveling to Durham as we write – let's revisit the best Binghamton-New Hampshire matches we have witnessed:

5. September 29, 2002.
Binghamton 3, New Hampshire 1

It was the Bearcats' first-ever America East Conference victory. At the old West Gym Field, Mike Austin finishes with a goal and an assist. He was later named the conference's Player of the Week.

4. November 8, 2008
America East Quarterfinals – Binghamton 3, New Hampshire 1

Cameron Keith finishes with a goal and an assist as the Bearcats move on to their sixth straight conference semifinal game.

3. October 30, 2010.
Binghamton 1, New Hampshire 0 (2 OT)

Tommy Klim's goal in the second sudden-death overtime period on Senior Day clinches the No. 4 seed for the Bearcats in the upcoming America East Tournament.

2. September 29, 2018
Binghamton 2, No. 25 New Hampshire 1

Before a facility-record 3,265 fans on Family Weekend at the Bearcats Sports Complex, Binghamton defeats No. 25 New Hampshire 2-1. Noah Luescher finished the game with a goal and an assist.

A memorable win … but not our favorite one.

1. November 6, 2004
America East Quarterfinals – Binghamton 0, New Hampshire 0.

Okay, technically, it wasn't a win – but still.

After a scoreless draw, Binghamton takes the decisive shootout 3-2. In the fifth and final round, with the score tied a 2-2, Stef Gonet makes his penalty kick in the top of the frame and makes the save in the bottom of the round.

Time Off

You saw the date of this post. Actually two dates.

This blogger is taking the weekend off as my family comes up to visit. The men's soccer players have some terrific families – as do I. Time to recharge the batteries and see them.

Talk to you Monday.

Making His Mark

Five weeks ago, Mats Roorda arrived from the Netherlands, ready to begin a new life at Binghamton University. This past Monday, he was named the America East Men's Soccer Co-Rookie of the Week.

"It's pretty special," he said. "I've only played six games for the university and to get this award so soon is a great feeling."

Roorda has had a great feeling about being at Binghamton University ever since the men's soccer coaching staff started talking to him during the recruiting process. It's a feeling that continues to this day."

"When I started talking to the coaches, they immediately gave me a good feeling about the university and how it is," he said. "When I came here, Coach Moon picked me up from the airport and he started to make me feel at home right then. It's a really good coaching staff."

For someone who arrived on campus knowing no one else – Roorda found a supportive group in the form of his teammates. They embraced him the moment he arrived before preseason.

"I had a great first few days here," he said. "The guys were so nice to me. I got to stay with Stephen McKenna for the first few days and got to know him pretty well. I am having a really good time and my teammates are the best. I am really happy to be here."

Roorda and the Bearcats hit a rough patch defensively earlier in the month. The bottom fell out when they conceded three goals in 11 minutes during a 3-0 loss at Iona on Sept. 14.

"To concede three goals in 11 minutes—that does not feel good," he said. "Right after the game, we talked to each other and said that this was not going to happen again. We knew we had to make things right."

Since the Iona game, Roorda and the Bearcats have cleaned up defensively. They have allowed only one goal in the last 201 minutes of play. Binghamton has gone 1-0-1 during that stretch.

"Mats has done quite well for us this year but especially against Lehigh and Monmouth," head coach Paul Marco said. "He made some terrific saves during key moments in both matches this week and he will continue to improve this season."

The Monmouth match give Roorda his first experience of playing in a Binghamton University Homecoming Match. He was very impressed with the atmosphere at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

"It was a big surprise," he said. "I heard from the guys before the weekend that it was a big thing. When we walked out of the door (of the Events Center) and saw the crowd and the band waiting for us -- that was really cool. I don't think I've experienced anything like that before."

Another part of the game day experience that Roorda has enjoyed has been the postgame tailgate meals provided by the Bearcat families.

"To be honest, I am not a big fan of Dutch food," he said. "I love the American food here and the food that the parents bring after games is amazing. Can't wait to eat more."

SEPTEMBER 24, 2019

In Remembrance

Since I have been working with the Binghamton men's soccer team in 2000, I have gotten to know longtime coach Tim Schum very well. He coached Binghamton from 1963-92 and is a member of several Halls of Fame.

One thing I have always appreciated about Schum is his updates about former Binghamton men's soccer players. Having gone to a Division III school myself (Gettysburg College '92) and having been a part of the track and cross country programs there, I have a special appreciation for our pre-Division I era at Binghamton University.

Much of the news Schum gives me is positive. Sadly, the update he gave myself as well as other athletic department administrators this weekend was not.

Joe Wolfer, a member of the first soccer team at Binghamton University in 1960, passed away on September 19. Back then, the university was still known as Harpur College.

Wolfer graduated from Harpur in 1965 with an English degree and had a long and distinguished teaching career at Binghamton High School where he also coached boy's soccer for many years.

In his freshman year in 1960, Wolfer turned up for Harpur's first soccer team. He had played soccer at Kings Park High School on Long Island. A forward, Wolfer was reported to have assisted on the second goal ever scored by a Colonial soccer team, aiding Ken Waltzer in a loss to Geneseo.

Going into his junior year, the team had but two ties to show for its efforts, but Wolfer was a key player for Coach Don O'Brien and he helped lead the 1962 team to a breakout 3-3-2 season.

Unfortunately the college decision to engage in a trimester calendar system shortened the succeeding four fall seasons, effectively curtailing normal soccer schedules.

Many of the veteran soccer players did not opt to attend the 1963 first trimester but Joe and teammates Bill Hackman and Andy Pierce did return to the 1964 team now coached by Schum and led the team to a 3-3 season.

"Joe was a great teammate," recalled Schum. "He loved the game and always gave it his all."

Post-Harper, in addition to his teaching, Wolfer kept in good shape by engaging in biking and cross-country skiing. He remained in touch with Hackman and both of them and their wives remained life-long friends.

We really appreciate Schum sharing all of this with us. It is important for all of us to remember those founding members of the men's soccer program.

Yesterday, however, Schum shared something even more special with me in relation to Wolfer. In 2010, the Binghamton men's soccer program held a 50th anniversary brunch on Homecoming Weekend. It attracted former players from all eras at Binghamton. I took a bunch of photos on that day, including one of Schum, Wolfer and several other players. Schum forwarded it to me yesterday, which I really appreciated.

So as we post this Daily Update today – it is with appreciation for Wolfer. Our thoughts are with his family as well.

Homecoming Wrap Up

Lots to go over from a busy Saturday on campus. Here are the quick hits:

Saturday was the first scoreless draw in the 13 years of the Homecoming Game at the Bearcats Sports Complex. It was also the third time in four home matches this season that Binghamton has gone into overtime.

Major shout outs were given by the players and coaches to Mo Taylor and the BU Pep Band – officially known as the Screamin' Green. Coach Marco even said they could came to training and play at some point.

The pregame send off from the Homecoming Tailgate was once again a staple of the day for the Bearcats. Click here for the video, courtesy of our Men's Soccer Twitter page.

Speaking of the Homecoming Tailgate, Jack Muller's family did not disappoint with their food selections. In addition to their Old Bay Wings, they came with authentic Maryland crab balls. Let's just say this blogger – also from Maryland -- was well fed.

We did catch up with several recent men's soccer alums who stopped by the Homecoming Tailgate as well. Great to have them back on campus.

Top 5 List: Homecoming Games

With one day left before the Bearcats' Homecoming match against Monmouth, it's time to rank the top five Homecoming Games at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Let's just say there are some epic games on this list.

5. 2010. Binghamton 1, Vermont 0

Ryan Walter's first-half goal was the difference in the Bearcats' 1-0 win over their longtime rivals. The victory came in the midst of a 2-0-2 conference start for Binghamton.

4.  2013. Binghamton 3, UMass Lowell 0

Logan Roberts had a goal and an assist. Marts Reid Warden did a dance in tribute to Daniel Sturridge of the Premier League. But it was Ben Nicholson's flip after his goal early in the first half that is the lasting tribute of this game.

3. 2016. Binghamton 3, Buffalo 0

A pair of first-half goals by Nikos Psarras vaulted the Bearcats to a 3-0 win over previously unbeaten Buffalo.

2. 2008. Binghamton 1, Vermont 0

Cameron Keith's goal in the 68th minute lifted the Bearcats to the victory in a rematch of the 2007 America East title game. The game featured the first sell out in Bearcats Sports Complex history, was aired live regionally by Time Warner Cable Sports and was preceded by the first-ever Homecoming Tailgate.

The victory lifted the Bearcats into first place in the America East.

1. 2007. Binghamton 2, Boston 1 (OT)

 Expect anything different?

In a game we've reference countless times here at the Men's Soccer Daily Update, Cameron Keith scored in the final seconds of the first sudden-death overtime period, igniting a celebrating that culminated with the players celebrating with the BU Soccer Hooligans in the stands.

To fully appreciate the win, it must be noted that the Terriers scored early in the first half to go up 1-0. Before the game, heavy rains forced the ceremony formally dedicating the Bearcats Sports Complex to be moved indoor. The night appeared to be a washout in the making.

 Keith, however, changed at that.

It's going to take a very special match to unseat our number one choice. But with two overtime wins at home already this year, we can't rule anything out.

2019, you are on the clock.

SEPTEMBER 19, 2019

Homecoming King

Perhaps no other name has been synonymous with Binghamton men's soccer Homecoming Games that Cameron Keith. In 2007 and 2008, he scored all three Bearcat goals in a pair of wins.

In 2007, his overtime goal lifted the Bearcats to a 2-1 win over Boston University. The following year, his second-half goal was the difference in a 1-0 victory over Vermont.

"My thoughts on Homecoming Weekend are pretty special," Keith said. "They were two of my most memorable games during my time at Binghamton for sure, and probably two of the best games and biggest results ever witnessed at the Bearcats Sports Complex in front of a capacity crowd."

The Homecoming Tailgate was held in 2008, Keith's second and final year on the team. It turned an already meaningful game into a spectacle.

"The whole build up to Homecoming is special," he said. "You can sense the buzz in the air as you walk around campus as everything builds towards the men's soccer game under the lights.  The tailgate before the game with everyone pumped up in the parking lot can't help to get your blood pumping for the game.  Then the atmosphere in the stadium itself – with the home crowd behind you and the student section bouncing, it gives me goose-bumps just thinking about it."

The victories were meaningful to Keith but the crowds at those game made those nights extra special.

"The crowd really was our 12th man in these games and drove us on to victory," he said. "These are the games I thrived in the most. I lived for these types of games and was always so up for them – as were my teammates.  The roar of the crowd when I scored and the elation as the final whistle went in both games is something I will never, ever forget.  These were truly special nights at the Bearcats Sports Complex and I look back so fondly on them…….in fact, I really miss them."

Keith returned to his native Scotland after graduation where he currently lives with his family. Still, he continues to root for the team he starred on a decade ago.

"Here's wishing the boys all the best for this years' Homecoming match," he said. "Also, here's hoping the green army on the bleachers can drive them home to victory."

Keith is hoping to return to the program's next alumni weekend but he has very busy as of late with his own family and catching up with former teammates.

"I hope to be back out in Binghamton next year for Alumni Weekend," he said. "I wanted to make this year to mark 10 years since I graduated but we recently had a baby daughter so I couldn't make it out this year.  I used up my vacation days for (Bearcat teammate) Justin Leskow's wedding instead."

Lehigh Leftovers

On Monday, we talked about Homecoming while the Bearcats were no doubt only focusing on Lehigh. Well today, we are sticking with the Lehigh win while the team is starting to prepare for Homecoming.

In what was no doubt the Bearcats' best performance of the year, they rallied for a 2-1 win over a Lehigh team that was receiving votes in the USC poll. The shots and possession time were just about even and Binghamton dug deep to force overtime.

Here was some rapid reaction from the team at the post-game tailgate:

Stephen McKenna

"Tonight was a great performance from the team and especially from the back line. Mats (Roorda) made some great saves tonight. He's a young guy but very experienced and knows what he is doing back there."

"This win is a great testament to the guys. We never gave up and eventually we were able to come back and tie the game."

Chris Stamper

"Our mindset has been very good this year in close games. It was a collective effort by the entire team."

"The vibe around this team right now after getting this win is very good. Having this win going into Homecoming definitely gives us a boost."

"Everyone was just frustrated after the Iona game and how we trained this week had a lot to do with our defensive effort tonight."

Lucas Arzan

"We struggled a lot in the midfield against Iona tracking players. Coach Marco did a great job in preparing us to not let the midfielders behind us tonight."

Looking Ahead

As for Homecoming the Bearcats are already thinking about the game and atmosphere on Saturday.

"We are really looking forward to it," Arzan said. "Now that we have momentum, we are in a good place heading into that game."

A big part of Homecoming is the tailgate for the team – which is easily the most elaborate one of the season. We asked some of the players what their favorite foods from Homecoming have been.

"Whoever brings the meatball does a great job with them," Arzan said.

The most popular dish last season however, was the Old Bay wings, courtesy of Jack Muller's family from Maryland.

"We need those wings on Saturday," Arzan said. "They have to bring them for Homecoming."

Giving Credit Where Credit is Due…

Lehigh's goal in the 59th minute was scored by Josh Luchini. It was his fourth goal in as many games. Luchini has twice been named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week this season.

Conceding goals is never desired but there was no shame in Luchini being the one score against the Bearcats.

The Last Time it Happened …

Binghamton's victory over Lehigh was its second overtime win of the season. The last time the Bearcats won a pair of overtime games in the same year was 2009.

Both victories have come at home, where the Bearcats are 2-1-0 so far this year.

The Day in Binghamton Men's Soccer History: September 18, 2004

Charles Darkwah finishes with a career-high five total points (two goals and an assist), powering Binghamton to a 5-0 win at Niagara.

Darkwah went on to be named the 2004 America East Striker of the Year.

Homecoming Week Begins

Okay, we admit we are jumping the gun here.

Coach Marco and the current Bearcats are focused only on the match tomorrow night against Lehigh. Still, it doesn't keep us from looking ahead to one of the biggest weeks of the season – Homecoming Week.

On Saturday, the university will host its 12th annual Homecoming Tailgate which will end in conjunction with the Bearcats' match against Monmouth at 6 p.m. The crowd for the Homecoming match has traditionally been among the biggest of the season.

We caught up with a few men's soccer alums over the weekend to get their memories of what it was like to play on Homecoming Week.

Jake Keegan played in the Homecoming match all four years he was with the Bearcats (2009-12). He scored the game-tying goal in Binghamton 1-1 draw against Rhode Island his freshman year and still has vivid memories of that moment.

"The best Binghamton crowd I ever experienced was Homecoming against Rhode Island in 2009," he said. "The place was absolutely rocking and the (BU Soccer) Hooligans were in full voice."

Keegan has since played professionally in Europe and North America but says the Homecoming crowds at the Bearcats Sports Complex rival any of the ones he has ever played in front of.

"The atmosphere at the Bearcats Sports Complex was great," he said. "It was as good as any of the crowds I have played in front of -- domestically or in Europe."

Darren McAllister played in both the 2007 and 2008 Homecoming matches. Over a decade later, he still has vivid memories of the atmosphere on match day.

"Every game night at the Bearcat Sports Complex was special to me," he said. "There was a buzz inside that stadium that I haven't experienced anywhere else. Homecoming weekends added another layer of excitement -- the packed out stands, the fans singing your name -- it was an amazing feeling that made you really fight for your teammates, the coaches and the fans when you were out there on the field. It was an honor to pull on the Binghamton shirt all those times, and those are memories I look back on fondly."

Both Keegan and McAllister will be tracking this year's Homecoming match from separate parts of the globe – but have a similar message to this year's Binghamton squad.

"Homecoming is another chance to express Binghamton pride, and every single person on the night, from the players, coaches, trainers, families, fans, and most certainly a Mr. David O'Brian will most certainly do that," McAllister said. "I wish you all the best for a great homecoming, I'll be cheering the team on from Scotland!"

"Best of luck to the current Binghamton squad," Keegan said. "Be thankful that you play for a school that fully supports its men's soccer program."

This Day in Binghamton Men's Soccer History: September 12, 2012

Speaking of Keegan, he scored a pair of goals – including the game winner at the end of regulation – leading Binghamton to a 3-2 win at UNC-Wilmington in the final round of the host team's invitational. He was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament.

Off to Iona

Head coach Paul Marco previewed this weekend's match at Iona on the WNBF Morning Show with Roger Neel. Here were some of his quotes:

"Iona is a lot like us. They have a few new players and play a very similar style to us. They like the soccer ball and it should be a very enjoyable match."

"The Rutgers match was a lot like this also – a very enjoyable match to watch. Both teams got after it and one of their players who scored a goal was actually on one of my youth club teams."

"I'm expecting tomorrow for our guys to come out strong. We have had a good week of training and have one more session tonight to put together the scouting report. We are looking forward to it."

Following Up

Today, we'll follow up on a few topics:

Remembrance

As we mentioned yesterday, Keith Augeri was a member of the 2001 men's soccer team that played Stony Brook one day after the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington. He is a high school social studies teacher and soccer coach. Every year on September 11, he shares with his students what it was like to play on that day.

Yesterday, his soccer team played a game and he made a point to talk to them beforehand of his match 18 years earlier.

"It always amazes me how quiet the kids get when I talk about it," he said. "We unfortunately lost our game 2-1 but I think the kids all put it into perspective given the gravity of the day."

Final Notes from Rutgers

Noah Luescher scored three goals in each of his first two seasons. His goal against Rutgers, which tied the score at 1-1, means he already has three goals this year.

Dan Mansfield became the second Binghamton player this season to net their first collegiate goal. Parker McKnight did the same against Syracuse on Sept. 2. Both Mansfield and McKnight graduated from nearby Vestal High School and were members of the 2017 New York State championship team.

Looking Back in Remembrance

Later today, Keith Augeri will be coaching his high school team in a soccer game out in Long Island. But when he speaks to his team beforehand, it will be about more than just the game they are about to play.

Eighteen years ago today, Augeri was a junior on the Binghamton men's soccer team. The Bearcats, who were only in their first season as a NCAA Division I program, were scheduled to host Stony Brook that afternoon. The date was September 11, 2001.

The events of that day quickly led to the postponement of the match between Binghamton and Stony Brook. The attacks on New York City and Washington D.C. brought the nation to a standstill and sports was put in the background.

Stony Brook had traveled up to Binghamton the previous day and in the process, was out of the New York City area when the World Trade Center Towers were attacked. The Seawolves, however, had no way of returning back home.

Both Binghamton and Stony Brook had many players from the New York City area. They spent Tuesday afternoon tracking down their families to make sure everyone was safe.

The following day, Stony Brook was still in the Binghamton area with nowhere to go. It was then that the two athletic departments made the decision to play the game. For Augeri and the rest of his teammates, it would be a time to start healing from the devastation of the previous day. For 90 minutes, they would play to honor those who had lost their lives during the attacks.

The match between Binghamton and Stony Brook was one of the few athletic contests going on in the nation on September 12, 2001. Both Major League Baseball and the National Football League postponed their games for a week. The NCAA football games, slated for that week, were also postponed. But the feeling among both Binghamton and Stony Brook was that they needed to play.

As the scorekeeper for that game, I remember the silence in the stands that day. Three days earlier, the Bearcats lost 3-2 to Marist in overtime in a game that had the crowd in a frenzy. Just 72 hours later, no one in the stands knew how to react to the match in front of them.

Then came the national anthem. No one will forget that moment. It was the first time that the National Anthem had been played at a Binghamton University athletic event since the attacks took place. It was easily the most emotional moment of the day.

Playing against a team that had beaten them 4-0 the previous year, Binghamton lost by only 1-0. The team was still transitioning to the NCAA Division I level and would win only two games in 2001. But the heart they showed that day – along with Stony Brook – should never be forgotten.

Personal Note

During the afternoon of September 11, I went across the street to the Holiday Inn, where Stony Brook was staying. The SID for Stony Brook was Shannon Hart, who remains a good friend of mine even though she has since left that industry. Each year, I remember how tough of a day it was to work and was glad I had one of my favorite opposing SIDs with me that day.

Coming Up Next

We'll check in with Keith Augeri about his talk to his team. We'll also look back on the match at Rutgers.

Worth the Wait

Parker McKnight had to wait a long time to play his first collegiate game. But so far, he has made the most of his time back.

After leading nearby Vestal High School to the 2017 New York State championship, he signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play with the Bearcats starting in the fall of 2018. Before he got to campus, however, he suffered an injury that ended his first season before it started. McKnight was granted a redshirt season and had to wait until this fall before stepping on to the field in a regular-season match.

"It feels really good to be back," he said. "It was a long recovery and there was a lot of time being put into it.

The McKnight family is becoming a staple within both the Binghamton men's and women's soccer programs. Connor McKnight graduated last spring after playing on the men's team from 2015-18. Sisters Olivia and Victoria are both freshmen on the women's squad this year.

Parker is close to both of his sisters and has been glad to see Olivia get off to such a quick start. She leads the women's team so far this year with four goals and 10 total points.

"Every time she scores, she tells me that I better score," he said. "It's really nice having both sisters on campus. We are very close."

Victoria, however, suffered the same fate as Parker did last year. In a preseason scrimmage, she suffered a season-ending injury. Parker has used that opportunity to encourage Victoria through the recovery process.

"It tough that she had the injury but since I went through it last year, I am able to help her out and encourage her," he said. "She just had surgery and is finally back to full rehab. She is excited and I am excited for her."

McKnight scored his first collegiate goal against Syracuse on Sept. 2. Although the Bearcats didn't win the game, it was a clear sign to Parker that he had made it all the way back from his injury.

"It was great," he said. "It was a great goal and I was excited. I wish we had held on and gotten the win but it's something we can learn from."

In the Bearcats' win over Drexel on Aug. 30, McKnight played a more subtle role in Binghamton's game winner in overtime. It was a match that ended when Noah Luescher converted his free kick in overtime.

"Earlier in the game, I told the referee I didn't need time to set up on a free kick," he said. "The referee asked me before Noah's kick if I wanted time and I said no. I saw the goalkeeper still setting up the defensive wall and I told Noah to just shoot the ball and he shot it. I knew it was going in the net the minute he kicked it."

McKnight may be in his first season as a redshirt freshman but he has gotten to play with 12 true freshmen during the first month. He has been impressed with them as a collective group.

"I like all 12 of them," he said. "All of them have been training really hard. I like the commitment of the group. Everyone likes each other and they are pushing each other to be better."

Binghamton stormed out to a 3-0 lead before holding on for a 3-2 win against St. Peter's.

Final Thoughts Before Drexel

Head coach Paul Marco did a phone interview on Roger Neel's WNBF Morning Show to preview tonight's match against Drexel. Here were some of his quotes

On the state of the team

"The guys have responded well in training this week after the Syracuse match. Syracuse was a very good, mature opponent and we made some mistakes after we went up 1-0 that got them back in the game."

"We get a few guys back from injuries tonight who are very quick on the ball. That is going to help us."

On Canisius

"Canisius will present a new challenge for us because they might be one of the tallest teams in the nation. They have a 6-5 center back and a 6-4 striker. What we need to do is keep the ball on the ground more and maintain possession."

"Even though they lost 4-1 to Bucknell, it was a tight match. They hit the cross bar and post a few times so they were definitely in the game.

On Freshman Goalkeeper Mats Roorda

"Mats has been outstanding in the first two matches. He has been very good in distributing the ball and is a very good shot stopper."

We also caught up with some of the players following Thursday's training session to get their thoughts.

Stephen McKenna

"The team has had a good couple of sessions after Syracuse and are well prepared for a tough Canisius team. We are looking to get back to our winning ways."

Odds and Ends

Several miscellaneous things to go over the day before the match against Drexel.

First, click here for the match links and preview.

Road Trip

The America East Conference was in town to interview Bearcat athletes across all sports and asked to talk to Noah Luescher. Among the things Luescher said that stood out:

1. He had never seen a baseball, basketball or lacrosse game before coming to Binghamton University two years ago.

2. He can speak five different languages. The America East put him to the test by asking him to say HAPPY NEW YEAR in German. Needless to say, Luescher nailed it.

Gear for Sale

BSN Sports is having a limited time sale on Bearcat Men's Soccer Team gear. The special runs through September 12.

Social Media Update

Before training, one of the coaches came up to us and asked if we saw a school's video promotion of their upcoming match. When we said we didn't they explained it to us and asked if we could do something similar.

Scoring Change?

We caught up with P.J. Parker following training on Thursday and talked about a wide variety of topics – ranging from his family's soccer background to his recovering from an injury last season. We will have much more on that interview next week.

We also asked him about the game-winning goal last week against Drexel, when he told Noah Luescher to go ahead and shoot the ball right away on the free kick.

The question we had is whether McKnight should get the official assist.

"Sure," he said after a long pause.

Binghamton defeated Colgate 1-0 in overtime at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Kyle Manscuk scored the game winner in overtime.

Manscuk had been nervous leading up to the match because the new set of cleats he ordered over the summer had yet to arrive. His father Peter delivered them the morning of the match against Colgate.

Those cleats were certainly put to good use.

Catching Up

Yesterday, we mentioned Jake Keegan's 3-point game in the Bearcats' 2012 win at Army. Today, we caught up with Jake, who is playing for the Greenville (S.C) team in the USL League One.

"We are currently in third place with six games left in the season," he said. "We are looking to finish strong and make a push for the inaugural league title."

Having graduated in 2012 from Binghamton, Keegan has played professional the past six years. He has played for Edmonton FC of the NASL as well as several team in Ireland. Greenville, however, is becoming one his favorite places to live.

"Greenville is a great city," he said. "I've loved living in the South."

Keegan still keeps a close eye on his former team at Binghamton. Not only was he coached by Paul Marco – but he played with assistant coach Tommy Moon for three years.

"I speak to Paul and Tommy whenever I get a chance," he said. "I follow along all of the games also."

Binghamton won its season opener against Drexel in overtime this past Friday and Keegan was pumped at the outcome.

"It was great to see them come from behind to win the season opener," he said. "I am hoping to get to a game sometime in October when my season is over."

With that in mind, we asked Keegan when the last time was that he was actually in Binghamton.

"I think it was 2016 if I remember correctly," he said.

On the Air and in the Press

Noah Luescher was a guest on the Pipe Dream's podcast today. We have been promised the link when its available, but we were told the interview went terrific. The Pipe Dream is posting out a related article, which we will be sure to publish when it comes out.

Looking Back Before Going Forward

Happy Labor Day everyone.

Before we move ahead to Syracuse, some final things to go over from Friday's big win.

What a Difference a Year Makes

In talking to several of the players after the game – the most noticeable thing about the victory was how they won. Last year, there were several matches in which the team fell behind 1-0 and was never able to overcome the deficit.

Not so on Friday night.

"I think the difference is that we are trying to create scoring changes without trying to force them," Chris Stamper said. "Last season, when things weren't going our way, we were trying to dump the ball long but now, even though we still do that at times, we try to keep possession of the ball as well."

"A lot of it has to do with mindset," Lucas Arzan said. "We all worked over the summer, stayed fit and that made all the difference tonight."

"It's a testament to the group of guys in the locker room," Stephen McKenna said. "No one sunk their head too low but we kept knocking on the door and Noah (Luescher) was able to put a couple (of balls) away."

Nice Debut

Of the seven total freshmen who started the match against Drexel on Friday, the most visible player was goalkeeper Mats Roorda. He made three saves to record the victory and impressed his new teammates in the process.

"I am very proud of Mats," Stamper said. "Even with that one goal that we let in as a team, he had a great game tonight."

"I got to know Mats before the preseason and saw what a great keeper he was," McKenna said. "We trained a lot together and I saw what a great keeper he was and we are happy to have him."

AUGUST 31-SEPTEMBER 1, 2019

Victory

On Thursday, we went over some of the most memorable games in the 12-year history of the Bearcats Sports Complex. It may be early in the season – but Binghamton's 2-1 come-from-behind overtime victory against Drexel has the potential to be high on this year's list.

Plenty to go over from this one
.
The Kick

Noah Luescher's free kick to win the game in the 94th minute has a story to it, based on the post-game interviews we did.

"I think Noah may have had a little help from a certain teammate," head coach Paul Marco said with a grin."

Minutes later, Luescher elaborated.

"I was setting up the ball to take the shot and Parker McKnight told me to just shoot the ball. I did. It's went in and we won."

Youth Was Served

Binghamton started six freshmen and one redshirt freshman against Drexel. As a captain, Luescher couldn't have been more proud.

"I'm really proud of them," he said. "They took a lot of responsibility tonight and played well. We got to keep going and pushing them harder every day but tonight they were playing college soccer like they had done it their whole lives."

Two years ago, Luescher was interviewed after finishing with a goal and an assist in the Bearcats' 4-0 season-opening win over George Washington. During the post-game interview, he was asked if he was ready for the post-game tailgate. He had no idea what it was until we explained that it was the victory feast. Tonight, it was his turn to introduce his freshmen to the aforementioned feast.

"Oh I'm ready now that I know what it is," he said. "I'm ready to take my fellow Euros up there now and show them what it's all about."

On the Menu

Speaking of the postgame tailgate – it's our custom to go over the spread. Lots of good stuff from Wegman's – including their subs. But kudos to the person who brought the eggplant parm.

Speaking of the tailgate, we asked some of the returning players if they had any more of an appetite after a win.

"For sure," Lucas Arzan said. "There is nothing like winning."

"My stomach is always in knots after games win or lose," Chris Stamper said. "I really never have much of an appetite."

For the Record

Hard to believe it's been seven years since Binghamton won an overtime game at the Bearcats Sports Complex. When Jake Keegan scored the game-winning goal against New Hampshire on Sept. 29, 2011, the current freshmen class was in fifth grade and Luescher was in seventh grade.

For the Record, Part 2

In Luescher's three season-opening games at Binghamton, he has three goals and two assists. He has recorded at least one point in all three games.

Final Thought for the Night

On a personal note, yesterday I gave my yearly media talk to the team. I told them that in the Daily Update for yesterday, I went over the most memorable games year-by-year at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

I told them I was eager to see which game it would be this year.

At the post-game tailgate, I reminded some of the guys what I told them yesterday. They assured me that there would be even better games to consider than their win tonight.

Coming Up Next

The Bearcats will be on to Syracuse on Monday, but we'll have much more from tonight's win.

Final Thoughts

Happy Opening Day everyone.

It's time for our last-minute thoughts from Coach Marco and the team prior to tonight's season opener against Drexel at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Coach Marco was a guest on Roger Neel's WNBF Morning Show to talk about the team heading into the season opener.

Click here for the video, courtesy of our Binghamton Athletics Facebook page.

As for the players, here are some of their thoughts:

Stephen McKenna

The group has had a great week of training and the coaching staff has prepared us really well. We are excited to get the season going against a very good Drexel team."

Jack Muller

Opening the season against a very solid Drexel team, you must come prepared. Our coaching staff has put in the time and really helped this week to get ready for the opening match. We are very excited to get the season going under the lights at the Bearcats Sports Complex in front of our great home fans. This is what we have been working for and I know we are up to the task."

Haris Brkovic

We are really excited and very prepared for the match against Drexel. We just need to stay calm and execute well."

Noah Luescher

"We took a step forward in our last preseason match and prepared very well this week. We are ready for the upcoming season and can't wait to see where this group of young guys takes us."

Top Games at Home

Friday night starts the 13th season that the men's soccer team has played its home games at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Since September 29, 2007, there have been 91 men's soccer matched played there.

We used to keep a Top 10 list of games played at the Bearcats Sports Complex. In recent years, however, we've switched to the best game of each season. There is a little bit of subjectivity, of course, but we've had few disagreements over the years from our readers.

2007
Binghamton 2, Boston 1 - OT (Oct. 6)

Opening night was a special one, with Cameron Keith recording a hat trick in the Bearcats 3-0 win over Cornell. But it was Keith's performance against Boston University on Homecoming Night a week later that was the more iconic moment. He tied the game at 1-1 in regulation and then scored the winning goal in the first overtime period. That set off a wild celebration as the team stormed the bleachers and celebrated with the crowd of 1,782 fans.

2008
Binghamton 1, Vermont 0 (Oct. 18)

Cameron Keith was the Homecoming king again, scoring midway through the second half in a rematch of the 2007 America East title game. The victory came before the first-ever sellout crowd at the Bearcats Sports Complex as well as a regional television audience. With the victory, Binghamton moved into first place in the America East standings.

2009
Binghamton 2, Albany 1 - OT (Oct. 7)

It was a fine line between winning and losing in the first sudden-death period against Albany. Jason Stenta saved a penalty kick to keep the Bearcats in the match. Less than two minutes later, Adam Whitehead won the match when he converted a free kick.

2010
Binghamton 1, New Hampshire 0 – 2 OT (Oct. 30)

Binghamton needed a win on Senior Day to clinch a first-round home game in the America East Tournament. New Hampshire only needed a tie for the same fate. Tommy Klim's goal in double overtime got the job done for the Bearcats.

2011
Binghamton 5, Boston University 1 (Oct. 30)

A freak snow storm forced the Bearcats' Senior Day game against Vermont to be pushed back a day. It was however, the perfect ending to a tough season. Although they had already been eliminated from advancing to the America East Tournament, the Bearcats played their best game of the year against the eventual regular-season champions. Jake Keegan had two goals and an assist while Adam Whitehead finished with a goal and two assists.

2012
Binghamton 2, New Hampshire 1 – OT (Sept. 29)

Jake Keegan had plenty of memorable goals during his career. But his overtime goal against New Hampshire was perhaps the most significant. It gave the Bearcats a win in their America East opener, which was the first step to them returning to the conference tournament.

2013
Binghamton 3, UMass Lowell 0 (Oct. 12)

It had been three years since Binghamton won on Homecoming Night, which made this night memorable enough. But Ben Nicholson's backflip after he scored in the opening minutes as well as Marts Reid-Warden's tribute to Daniel Sturridge when he scored late in the game made it extra memorable.

2014
Binghamton 1, Stony Brook 1 – AE Quarterfinals (Nov. 8)

In the most recent America East Tournament game played at the Bearcats Sports Complex, the Bearcats rallied to knock off Stony Brook in the quarterfinal round. Tucker Sandercock tied the game at 1-1 late in regulation. The two teams went to a decisive shootout, which the Bearcats won 4-3 in six frames. Robert Moewes made three saves in the penalty kick round.

2015
Binghamton 2, UMBC 1 (Oct. 24)

On family weekend, Binghamton defeated defending conference champion UMBC 2-1 to move into first place in the America East. Pascal Trappe and Harrison Weilbacher scored for the Bearcats.

2016
Binghamton 3, Buffalo 0 (Sept. 24)

In a Homecoming match that was more competitive than the final score, Binghamton knocked off the Bulls 3-0. Nikos Psarras recorded his first career two-goal game and Stephen McKenna added an insurance goal late in the match.

2017
Binghamton 4, George Washington 0 (August 25)

Noah Luescher got his career off to an impressive start with a goal and an assist against the Colonials in the season opener. The tone was set, however, when Chris Nkogue opened up the scoring in the fourth minute of play.

2018
Binghamton 2, No. 25 New Hampshire 1 (Sept. 29)

Before a facility-record 3,265 fans on Family Weekend, Binghamton defeated No. 25 New Hampshire 2-1 to improve to 2-0-0 in the America East. Noah Luescher scored the game-winning goal in front of his family, who made the trip over from his native Switzerland.

2019?

We'll re-evaluate this at the end of the season. Looking forward to seeing what our top home game is.

Thoughts Heading into Friday

Our first mulligan of the year. With things getting hectic before Friday's home opener, we missed our post yesterday. But we are back today.

Anyways, we caught up with head coach Paul Marco to get some his thoughts heading into the regulars season:

On the progress the team has made during preseason:

"This is always an exciting time of the year. We have 12 new faces and 16 freshmen overall but the way the guys have interacted with each other and embraced each other and tried to figure out each of their roles has been great. We have gotten a lot accomplished during the preseason. We have a long way to go but right now, everything is going pretty well."

On the incoming class:

"This is one of our classes that we will look back and say that they really left their mark here. They are going to have a lot of influence on this team over the next few years and our returning group has done a good job showing them what we are about and the correct way to do things here."

On the team chemistry:

"The culture of our team continues to improve," Marco said. "The way that the guys have embraced each other and their roles on the team has been outstanding. This group is all-in for sure."
On the team's schedule:

"I think we have put an extremely well-balanced schedule together. There is a good balance between home and away games and a good amount of rest days in between matches. We have tried to mirror our conference routine with the non-conference games we are playing. A lot of them play a similar style to the America East teams. So we are very happy with our schedule for 2019"

We will have more of his quotes in the season preview, which will be posted later today.

Wrapping Up the Weekend

Binghamton concluded the exhibition part of its schedule with a match against Navy on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. We caught up with Coach Marco and some of the players afterwards for their thoughts.

Head Coach Paul Marco

"I thought we grew a lot tonight and things have come together nicely in the last week. I think our young guys have done quite well and that Noah and Stephen have done a terrific job in leading the team."

"In tonight's match, I thought we were really good in moments and showed our youth in moments. We have got to be a little bit tougher, a little more competitive and play with a sense of urgency."

"I thought Navy did a good job. We played them last year in preseason. We had a good performance and grew a lot tonight and we've grown a lot during the preseason."
"We need to make sure that the guys stay healthy. We are hoping to get a few guys back this week also,"

Stephen McKenna

"Overall, it was definitely the best performance of the preseason against a very fit and organized Navy side. There are definitely some things we have to fix before Drexel. We are looking forward to a great week of training and to next Friday."

Haris Brkovic

"I think we started the first half well and played the first half much better than the second half. Overall, it was our best performance of the preseason but there are still some things we have to fix."

"Navy was very prepared for the game. Their fitness looked good and they had some good individuals. Overall, it was a good match up and we are looking to be ready for Drexel."

Five Years Back

With the decade of the 2010s coming to a close, we checked back yesterday at what took place with the Binghamton men's soccer program in 10-year intervals. Today, let's hit the 5-year marks.

Five Years Ago

In 2014, the Bearcats returned to the America East semifinals for the first time in six years. Binghamton won a thrilling quarterfinal shootout against Stony Brook in the America East quarterfinals – which marked the first postseason game it hosted since 2008.

Fifteen Years Ago

Binghamton was the defending America East Champion in 2004. The Bearcats were ranked during the season as high as No. 19 in both major polls (NSCAA and College Soccer News). In the end, however, Binghamton lost the America East title game at Boston University.

Twenty-Five Years Ago

Known then as the Colonials, Binghamton made its nine and final appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. It finished the season 12-6-1.

See you next week.

Thoughts from the (New) Bearcat Bus

The Binghamton men's soccer team left campus for their first road scrimmage of the preseason against Colgate this morning. They did so in the new Bearcat bus, which they boarded in the Events Center parking lot.

Click here for a photo of the new bus – and the team boarding it – courtesy of our men's soccer Instagram page.

After the match, we caught up with some of the players – while they were still on the aforementioned bus – to get their thoughts about the scrimmage at Colgate.

Stephen McKenna

I thought we improved from our first scrimmage. The guys worked really hard and started to implement some of the things we went over in training. It was a good building block towards our next preseason game and ultimately, Drexel."

Jack Muller

"It was a hard-fought game from the team today. I think we took a step today in the right direction.  You could see the values and tactics from the last couple of days of training show in today's game. Another good step to help us get ready for the season opener against Drexel."

Noah Luescher

"It was definitely a step in the right direction. We still have a long way to go but you can see the first connections in the team being formed and there were a couple of good moments in the game that showed that. We have to get back to work now and keep grinding to be ready to take on Drexel on August 30."

The Boys Are Back In Town

The majority of the Binghamton men's soccer team returned to campus over the weekend but preseason officially got under way Tuesday. The 28 players – which includes 13 newcomers – arrived at the Events Center for a day of meetings and to get to know each other better.

"It's always an exciting time to return for preseason," senior back Stephen McKenna said. "It's good to see all of the new faces, the returning guys and the coaching staff. It's been a really exciting day."

Junior midfielder Noah Luescher was busy in Des Moines playing for the PDL but he got to go home to Switzerland to recharge the batteries for this coming year.

"I was in Des Moines for two and a half months but fortunately, I got to go back home to Switzerland and see my family and friends. But I'm excited to be back and it's good to see everyone."

With nearly half the squad being new, Luescher reached out to all of them during the summer to get acquainted. He came away with a favorable first impression.

"I reached out to all of those guys while I was in Des Moines to get to know them," he said. "They are all good guys and I am excited to work with them. I am looking forward to seeing what they can bring to the team and to the field."

Before the team's kickoff meeting, there was an icebreaker in which each of the players mentioned something interesting that they did over the summer.

"I learned that some of the guys went to some really nice places," McKenna said. "A lot of guys had a great summer and played a lot and worked hard."

Say Cheese

In the middle of the kickoff meeting, the Bearcats took their head shots and marketing photos in the Events Center Media Room. Everything went smooth although some of the players forgot to take the tags off their new cleats.

"I was little disappointed with them not to take the tags off," Luescher said. "But we got superb cleats and if they want to keep the tags on for photo day, that's fine."

McKenna, however, was not afraid to draw the line.

"We will definitely make sure the tags are off the cleats before Navy and Drexel," he said.

Introduction

Welcome to our 12th year of the Binghamton Men's Soccer Daily Update. We started this blog during the 2008 season and it has since become a popular staple of our coverage of the program.

The Men's Soccer Daily Update will be posted each week day. Depending on the games, there may be posts on Saturday or Sunday as well.

For those of you who are new to the program, the Men's Soccer Daily Update seeks to capture components of the Bearcat program that go beyond the box scores and game results. There has been plenty to feature. In addition to advancing to the America East title game seven times since 2003, the Binghamton men's soccer program has been just as successful in the classroom and as active in the community.

Tomorrow, the men's soccer team reports back to campus to begin the 2019 preseason. We will begin our daily coverage then as well.

We hope that the Men's Soccer Daily Update will be a consistent source of news and information throughout the upcoming season.

As always, for any feedback or story ideas, please feel free to contact us.
