BALTIMORE, Md. - Host Loyola (4-4) shot 63 percent to build a double-digit halftime lead and held off Binghamton men's basketball (4-4), 77-65, Sunday night at Reitz Arena. The road loss snapped BU's four-game win streak.Â
The Greyhounds used a 23-5 run to turn a 20-19 Bearcats lead (with 9:36 left) into a 42-25 halftime bulge. Binghamton struggled to 30 percent shooting in the opening half and trailed by as many as 21 points (51-30) early in the second half before mounting a rally.
Freshman forward
George Tinsley scored BU's first 11 points of the second half and he sparked a 17-8 Bearcats run that brought them to within 12, 59-47, with 12 minutes left. But Loyola wouldn't bend further and BU couldn't bring its margin to single digits the rest of the way.
"The game was lost in the first half," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "When you come into these road environments against good teams, you have to play well. And we didn't really play well in the first half. We uncharacteristically missed a lot of open shots, defensively we were a step behind them, they were able to open up the lead and we couldn't get all the way back. We had a better second half offensively and we kept attacking the lane and finally started making shots. We needed our defense to keep us in it and give us a better chance to win."
Tinsley wound up with a game-high 24 points and recorded his third double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Tinsley scored 19 points in the second half to pace the Bearcats' offense. Sophomore guard
Sam Sessoms added 17 points (13 in second half) and senior forward
Pierre Sarr chipped in 15 rebounds and seven points. Freshman guard
Brenton Mills handed out a team-high five assists with eight points and six boards.
Binghamton continues its run against Patriot League teams with a home tilt against reigning PL champion Colgate on Wednesday.  Â
