Men's basketball beaten by UMBC 64-50

Sessoms (23 pts.) and Show (20 pts.) combine for 43 points

VESTAL, N.Y. - Guards Sam Sessoms and J.C. Show combined for 43 of Binghamton's 50 points but the Bearcats (7-19, 3-8 America East) came up short against visiting UMBC, 64-50, Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.

The reigning America East champion Retrievers (16-10, 8-3 AE) put four players in double figures and used a 13-2 late run to stretch a two-point margin.

After a Show jumper brought BU to within two, 47-45, with 6:50 left, UMBC embarked on the key run, which featured three 3-pointers, including two by senior Joe Sherburne (16 pts.). Binghamton went 0-for-3 with four turnovers in that decisive stretch, which spanned 4:50.

"We just couldn't generate enough offense tonight," head coach Tommy Dempsey said. "They're a very good defensive team ... they collapse in the paint and the way they play their defense you have to make jump shots to beat them. We took 30 threes but that was the formula for scoring tonight. Unfortunately only making nine wasn't going to get it done."

Sessoms, No. 5 in the nation in freshman scoring, raised his season average to 18.3 with another splendid performance. He hit 10-of-17 shots for 23 points and added three steals. It was the 10th game this season he's gone over the 20-point mark.

Show had his best output of the season and reached the 20-point mark for the 11th time in his tenure at Binghamton. He hit 6-of-11 from beyond the arc to spark his night, which included 12 points in the first half.

Senior forwards Chancellor Barnard and Caleb Stewart had nine rebounds apiece.

Binghamton has a bye weekend and eight days off before playing at UMass Lowell next Thursday.
