Men's Basketball Tops Lowell 81-66

Four Bearcats score double-digits, Sessoms leads with 21 points

LOWELL, MASS. - The Binghamton men's basketball team (8-19, 4-8 AE) topped UMass Lowell (14-14, 6-7 AE) 81-66 on the road Thursday night at the Costello Athletic Center.

Coming off an eight-day break, Binghamton controlled the game from start to finish. The Bearcats saw its biggest lead coming in the second half as they kept an 18 point distance from the River Hawks to seal the win. The victory moves Binghamton into seventh place in the conference standings, eyeing a top-8 playoff spot with post-season rapidly approaching.

After being tied 10-10 five minutes into the game, an 8-0 Binghamton run ensued, followed by five scoreless River Hawk minutes. Quickly extending their lead to 16, the Bearcats led 29-13 with seven minutes to go in the first half. Senior J.C. Show hit a fade-away shot, followed by Caleb Stewart knocking down a three as Binghamton rolled into the half leading 41-29.

Sam Sessoms scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half, leading a diverse scoreboard for the Bearcats. Sessoms, in his 11th game of 20+ points, is ranked fifth in the nation in freshman scoring (18.3 ppg).

Four players scored double-digits in the game, with Caleb Stewart trailing close behind Sessoms with 18 points and Show adding 17. Timmy Rose and Calistus Anyichie also made substantial contributions off the bench, as Rose finished the game with 11 points and Anyichie secured six rebounds. Stewart led the team overall with nine rebounds and three blocks, solidifying his fifth place standing in the America East averaging 7.4 rebounds per game.

Binghamton's 81 points is the most points its scored in conference play this season, topping its average of 63.9 ppg. The Bearcats went for 40 points in the second half to secure the road victory.

The Bearcats return home to host Vermont Saturday at the Events Center. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time.

NOTES
It was the 11th time this season Sessoms has scored 20 or more points … the win over UMass Lowell gives the Bearcats a three and a half game cushion in the standings, holding the tiebreaker edge. Holding firmly in seventh place, BU eyes a playoff position in the final three weeks of season.
