Softball Heads to America East Tournament

Bearcats begin play Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. vs. Stony Brook

STORY LINES
 
- Binghamton (17-27) is the No. 6 seed and begins play at the America East Tournament against No. 3 Stony Brook on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The winner will face No. 1 UMass Lowell on Thursday at 11 a.m. The tournament once again has a double-elimination format. This marks the first year that Hartford has hosted the event.
 
- Binghamton has been off since taking two out of three games against Maine April 27-28 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Junior catcher Sara Herskowitz and sophomore shortstop Makayla Alvarez each hit a team-best .375 (3-for-8) against the Black Bearcats
 
- The Bearcats are making their eighth appearance in the America East Tournament, having last won the event in 2015. They are 10-13 all time, having also recorded third-place finishes in five of the other six years.
 
- Last season, Binghamton placed fifth at the America East Tournament. After defeating Maine 3-1, the Bearcats lost 9-0 to Albany and 4-3 to the Black Bears. Herskowitz batted .429 during the tournament while current sophomore Lauren Martinez hit .375 with a home run.
 
-  Freshman second baseman Marissa Braito ranks ninth in the America East in batting (.326), is fifth in on-base percentage (.430), No. 10 in runs scored (29) and tied for second with five triples. Herskowitz is third with 34 RBI, eighth with a .546 slugging percentage and fourth with 13 doubles. Alvarez, meanwhile, is third with nine home runs and fourth in slugging percentage (.643).
 
- Braito has been named the America East Rookie of the Week three times this season (Feb. 19, March17 & March 24). Fellow freshman pitcher Morgan Bienkowski was the conference's Rookie of the Week on April 30. Alvarez, meanwhile, was the America East Player of the Week on Feb. 19.
