NEWARK, DE- The Binghamton Volleyball team (0-1) dropped their first match of the season at the Delaware classic Friday afternoon. The Bearcats were defeated by Coppin State (1-0) in straight sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-19).
Francela Ulate led the way with eight kills and was second in digs with nine. She was followed by
Victoria Keghlian with six kills.
Elizabeth Kaner had double digit kills with 12 and
Emma Rainville led in assists with a dozen of her own.
The first set went back-and-forth with the Bearcats taking a lead as late as 23-22, but the Bald Eagles rattled off three straight points to take the opening set.
In the second set saw the Bearcats lead most of the way early on, but an 8-0 run by Coppin State made it 19-13 and they would go on to win it by a score of 25-19.
The Bald Eagles took a 7-4 lead early in the final set, and maintained that slight edge for the entirety of the frame. The Bearcats clawed their way back to a two-point deficit three times, but were unable to get over the hump.
"We fought hard and made some great plays, but just couldn't get things going consistently," said head coach
Glenn Kiriyama. "Our freshmen came in and made contributions in each set. If we can continue to learn and play together, we will be fine."
Freshmen
Audrey Haworth and
Anna Sprys added four and two kills respectively, each recording efficient hitting percentages.
The Bearcats are back in action tomorrow when they take on Delaware at 1:30 p.m. and West Virginia at 4:30 p.m.
