Volleyball Falls to Kent State, Army on Day One in West Point

Haworth, Sprys lead Bearcats in game one

The Binghamton Volleyball team dropped two matches Friday to kick off the Black Knights Invitational in West Point. The Bearcats were unable to take a set against Kent State (25-16, 25-23, 25-16) or host Army (25-20, 25-11, 26-24).

In the first match, Audrey Haworth led with 9 kills while fellow freshman Anna Sprys provided a spark, notching six kills on only eight attempts. She also had five blocks.

The second match saw a balanced attack for the Bearcats, with five players registering four or more kills.

Against the Golden Eagles, Binghamton got off to a slow start and fell behind 19-8. The team was able to bring it to 22-16, but eventually dropped the opening frame. In the second set, Binghamton made a sizable comeback to take a 22-20 advantage before falling 25-23. The Golden Eagles took the third set 25-16 to come out victorious.

The evening match against Army started slowly with the team dropping the opening two sets. The Bearcats began to bid for a comeback and took command in the third set at 17-9, but Army chipped away at the advantage until tying it up at 22. The frame went back and forth at the end, but two straight kills by Sydney Morriss ended the hopes for Binghamton.

The Bearcats return to the court tomorrow for an afternoon matchup with Bryant beginning at 1:30 p.m.
