Bearcats drop two matches to kick off Georgetown Invite

Gadelha registers seven blocks against host Hoyas

The Binghamton volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Friday afternoon to kick off the Georgetown Invitational. The Bearcats fell to Florida International in straight sets before going down in four sets to the host Hoyas

Francela Ulate and Audrey Haworth each had solid matches for the Bearcats against Florida International as they registered double-digit kills. Tyra Wilson also had seven kills to just one attack error.

In the second match, Elis Gadelha and Victoria Keghlian sparked Binghamton in the middle sets. Gadelha had seven blocks and Keglian had several kills to close out the second set.

Against Florida International, the Bearcats started slow and fell 25-14 in the opening set. The team made a run in the second frame, cutting into a Panther deficit to tie the score twice before eventually falling, 25-21. The third set went similarly to the former, but the Bearcats took a lead in this one at 14-12 before falling by the same score, 25-21.

In the nightcap, the Bearcats were trounced in the opening set before coming to life in the second and third. Trailing late in the second, Keghlian put together a string of kills to bring the team right back into it. After a few back-and-forth rallies, an attack error by the Hoyas finally ended it and the Bearcats won 27-25.

Binghamton started right where it left off in the third, taking a 6-1 lead and eventually leading 12-4. Wilson, Gadelh, and Keghlian all had key blocks to spark the run. The Hoyas eventually chipped away at the lead and tied it at 17 before winning 25-23. Georgetown took the final frame, 25-14 to come out victorious.

The Bearcats have a quick turnaround tomorrow, and will face Morgan State at 11 a.m. before returning home.
