Volleyball falls to Morgan State in five sets despite Ulate’s 21 kills

Wilson, Ulate named to all-tournament team

The Binghamton volleyball team dropped the finale of the Georgetown Invitational to Morgan State in five sets Saturday morning. The Bearcats took the first and fourth sets, fell behind early in the fifth frame and were unable to make a comeback.

Francela Ulate put together a strong performance, registering 21 kills and had a solid .367 hitting percentage. Audrey Haworth had 10 kills and Kiara Adams handed out 41 assists.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kim Lavender led with 25 digs while Elis Gadelha added six blocks. She now has 13 blocks in her last two matches.

The Bearcats started strong in the first set, taking a 12-4 lead. The Bears chipped away, and eventually took a one-point lead at 20-19, but Binghamton held strong and took six of the last nine points to win the frame.

The second set went back-and forth. The Bearcats seemed to be in the driver's seat at 26-25, but Morgan State challenged a call that was reversed and they took the lead at that same score before taking the set soon after.

Following a tough third set for Binghamton, the team showed resolve in a close fourth set to make this match go the distance. Ulate and Tyra Wilson had critical kills down the stretch.

Morgan State, who had played in three five-set matches this season, showed its experience and took control in the fifth set at 8-1. The Bearcats attempted to make a comeback (trimmed the deficit to 12-7), but were unable to do so.

Following the conclusion of the match, Wilson and Ulate were named to the all-tournament team.

Binghamton hosts a match for the first time this season on Wednesday against Siena. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
