LOWELL, MA - The Binghamton men's basketball team (7-9, 1-2 AE) fell 85-66 to UMass Lowell (8-10, 2-1 AE) Saturday night on the road at Tsongas Center.
Pierre Sarr,
Brenton Mills and
Richard Caldwell, Jr. scored 14 points each to share a team-high in the conference matchup. Â
An aggressive Lowell defense would lock down
Sam Sessoms and hold him to just two points on the night, coming up with nine steals and generating 25% of their offense off Binghamton turnovers. On the opposite end, the River Hawks outshot BU 56% to 41% from the field and shot 48% from beyond the arc, as the duo of Christian Lutete (28) and Obadiah Noel (25) combined for over half of UML's points.
The Bearcats controlled the pace for the majority of the first half, as back-to-back three pointers from Caldwell Jr. gave Binghamton the lead and sparked a 20-9 run. The Bearcats sat on a 30-24 lead with just over five minutes to play before the end of the half. Momentum shifted as Lowell's Lutete drained seven points in a little over two minutes. UML outscored BU 20-4 to end the half, leading 44-34.
Mills opened scoring in the second half with a layup, followed by points from Sarr and
George Tinsley to close the gap 46-40. The River Hawks answered, as Lutete scored seven straight of a 9-0 run to regain control. The Bearcats tried multiple defenses but could not put together enough stops to get closer than 12 the remainder of the game.Â
Tinsley scored 11 points and had seven rebounds in the game, while Jevon "J.J." Brown added six.
The Bearcats are back at home to face Vermont Wednesday afternoon. Tip is at 7 p.m. at the Events Center.Â
