VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Vermont (12-6, 2-1 America East) used a pair of big runs to distance themselves from Binghamton men's basketball (7-10, 1-3 AE) 72-53 Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
The Catamounts closed the first half with a 20-8 push and took a 43-22 cushion into the locker room. In the second half, Binghamton twice brought it back to 13 points and trailed 49-36 with 13:32 to play before Vermont used a decisive 21-3 run to put the game away.
Binghamton outscored Vermont 31-29 in the second half but the damage was done in the opening frame.
Five Catamounts reached double figures and the team made 10 3-pointers and shot 49 percent for the game.Â
Freshman guard
Brenton Mills led BU with 13 points in 28 minutes. He hit 3-of-6 from 3-point range and added three assists. Sophomore guard
Sam Sessoms added nine points and three assists. Senior guard
Richard Caldwell, Jr. collected eight points an seven boards and junior guard
Javon Brown scored a season-high eight points in 23 minutes.Â
The Bearcats quickly fell behind 11-2 less than five minutes into the contest. Mills and Brown struck for 3s to bring BU to within six, 14-8, with 12:19 to play in the half. But the Catamounts limited Binghamton to six field goals the rest of the half and used the big run to build a 21-point cushion.
Binghamton next travels to Bangor for a Sunday afternoon tilt against Maine. Â
