Volleyball drops first America East contest to Stony Brook

Bart leads BU with a .500 hitting percentage, Stan notches 12 kills

VESTAL, N.Y - The Binghamton volleyball team dropped its first America East contest to Stony Brook Friday evening. The Bearcats (6-9 overall, 2-1 AE) fell in straight sets, 19-25, 16-25, 20-25.

Annie Bart had a strong day offensively for BU, notching seven kills without an error in the match. Stefana Stan had 12 kills to lead the team. Defensively, Elis Gadelha had five blocks, and Emily Rail added 11 digs. Kiara Adams handed out 28 assists.

The SeaWolves (7-9 Overall, 1-1 AE) were able to get off to a hot start in the opening set, taking an 11-5 advantage on a kill by Hailey Barden. Binghamton chipped away to make it 15-13 on a Stan kill, but another Stony Brook run put the first frame out of reach. When it was all said and done, the visitors took the opening set, 25-19.

The second set started similarly to the first, with Stony Brook taking a lead out of the gate. Trailing 14-5, Binghamton rallied to trim the deficit to 15-10, before the visitors went on to score eight of ten points to stretch out the advantage before winning 25-16.

Binghamton started the third on top, taking an 8-4 lead, capped off by a block by Anna Sprys and Stan. The middle of the set went back-and-forth, and the SeaWolves were able to tie the score for the first time at 12. The score would be tied as late as 17-17, but three of four points by the visitors gave them the lead for good en route to the 3-0 win.

The Bearcats will have nine days before its next match, as they will host Hartford on Sunday, October 10. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
