Volleyball drops road match against UMBC

Adams leads BU with 13 digs, Aguirre adds eight

BALTIMORE, MD. - The Binghamton volleyball team fell to UMBC in three sets to kick off its weekend road trip. The conference leaders showed why they're at the top of the standings, with the line score showing 15-25, 11-25, 19-25 in favor of the home team.

The Retriever defense showed its teeth throughout the match, but Binghamton also put up a strong defensive effort, holding the hosts to a .200 hitting percentage. Kiara Adams led the way with 13 digs for BU while freshman Sydney Aguirre and sophomore Stefana Stan added eight digs apiece. Anna Sprys also had four blocks.

The first set went back-and-forth in the early going, but UMBC used a run to take a 16-8 lead. The deficit remained the same late in the set at 23-15, but the Retrievers were able to score the final two points to take the opening frame, 25-15.

UMBC took control of the second set in the early going, before Binghamton cut the deficit to 8-6. A 9-1 by the Retrievers put the set out of reach, as BU was unable to regain its footing.

The third was kept close by Binghamton, who trailed 9-3 early. A small run made it 12-8 in favor of UMBC, but the Retrievers were able to maintain a slight edge throughout the frame before scoring three of the final four points of the match to win.

The Bearcats will continue play Sunday afternoon at Stony Brook. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
