Game Recap: Volleyball | | John Hartrick

Volleyball falls to AE leading UMBC 3-1

Bearcats take third set, only UMBC’s fourth dropped set in conference play

The Binghamton volleyball team was able to fight back after falling behind two sets to zero, but ultimately fell to UMBC in a 3-1 decision Sunday afternoon. Despite BU out blocking the visitors, the Bearcats ended on the losing side of a 14-25, 15-25, 25-21, 17-25 line.

Annie Bart led the team with 10 kills on the afternoon, as Kiara Adams handed out 31 assists. The defense emerged late, registering all 12 blocks in the third set or later. Elis Gadelha had eight block assists on the match.

The first set was even early on, but a 6-0 run gave the Retrievers a 10-4 lead. The Bearcats battled back, staying with UMBC until the final points of the match. Trailing 20-14, Binghamton surrendered the final five points of the frame and fell behind 1-0.

UMBC took control early in the second set en route to the 25-15 win, but Binghamton responded in the third set. Trailing 8-3, Anna Sprys had a kill, and Gadelha and Bart used three straight blocks to make it 8-7. A 7-0 run by the Retrievers made it 16-9, but a 9-1 Bearcat run gave them an 18-17. Then, trailing 20-19, another 6-1 forced a fourth set. In the final run, Bart had four kills.

Binghamton looked to ride the momentum in the fourth, taking a 3-1 lead early before a 5-0 run from UMBC gave the conference leaders the lead for good. When it was all said and done, the Retrievers won the final set, 25-17.

Binghamton continues play next weekend with matches against New Hampshire and NJIT. Matches will be on Friday and Sunday, and will begin at 7 and 1 p.m. respectively.
