NEW YORK, N.Y. – Host Columbia (1-2) rallied from 16 points down in the final 6:19 of regulation and went on to defeat Binghamton men's basketball (1-2) 85-77 in overtime Wednesday night at Levien Gymnasium.
The loss spoiled a brilliant shooting performance by junior guard
Tyler Bertram, who poured in a career-high 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range. Bertram's three with 12:08 left gave the Bearcats a 65-49 lead. But the Lions used a decisive 26-2 run that bridged the end of regulation and overtime.
The Bearcats broke away from a 38-38 halftime tie with a 15-0 run early in the second half. Bertram had six points during the run, which also featured five points from sophomore guard
John McGriff, who wound up with 12 points for the game. The run was part of a larger 21-3 Bearcats run that gave them the 16-point cushion.
Binghamton still led 69-53 with 6:19 left before Columbia stormed back to force the extra session.
Columbia made all five of its shots in the overtime to complete the comeback and earn the team's first win of the season.
Junior forward
George Tinsley added 14 points, five rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Binghamton next travels to Hartford for a showdown with No. 23 UConn Saturday afternoon at the XL Center.
