Men's basketball bounces Hartwick 110-41

Petcash scores 21 in season debut, leads six Bearcats in double figures

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's basketball (2-3) put six players in double figures and set multiple school records in a 110-41 win over regional foe Hartwick (0-5) Sunday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. Playing at home for just the second time this season, BU enjoyed its largest margin of victory (69 points) in 76 years of basketball. The game served as an exhibition game for the Division III Hawks, who were limited to 12 second-half points.

Junior guard Dan Petcash returned from injury and celebrated his season-debut with a game-high 21 points (in 19 minutes) on 8-of-9 shooting. He made his first eight shots, including 4-of-4 accuracy from 3-point range. Joining him in double figures were juniors Bryce Beamer (13 pts.), Ogheneyole Akuwovo (11), Tyler Bertram (11) and Hakon Hjalmarsson (11).

The Bearcats set Division I-era records for most field goals in a game (45), highest field goal percentage (65%), most points in a half (59 in first half) and fewest points allowed in a half (12 in second half). The team handed out a season-high 21 assists and put the hammer down in the second half, holding Hartwick to just four field goals.

More than six minutes into the game, BU held a narrow 16-14 lead. But Hjalmarsson (6 pts.), sophomore Kellen Amos (5) and Petcash (4) keyed a 15-1 run that gave the Bearcats a 31-15 cushion halfway through the half. Hartwick drew no closer than 14 points the rest of the way as Binghamton shot 68% and doubled up its visitors over the remainder of the half (28-14) to build a 59-29 margin at intermission.

Beamer scored all 13 of his points in the second period as BU outscored the Hawks 51-12. Thirteen different players reached the scoring column.

It's back to the road from here as BU plays at Atlantic 10 member St. Joseph's Wednesday night in Philadelphia before traveling to Boston for a Saturday afternoon tilt with former America East foe Boston University. Five of Binghamton's first seven games are on the road to open the 2021-22 season.
