BALTIMORE, MD. - The Binghamton University volleyball team fell to Albany and UMBC in America East pod play Sunday afternoon in Baltimore. The Bearcats opened the day against the Great Danes in a 25-19, 25-18, 25-16 defeat before dropping the nightcap against the host Retrievers by a score of 25-20, 25-22, 25-21.
Senior outside hitter Francela Ulate continues to lead BU as she contributed 18 kills over the two matches. She also added a career-high five service aces against UMBC. Junior middle blocker had team-high 10 kills against the Retrievers. Emily Rail also had nine digs in the nightcap.
Against the Great Danes, Binghamton fell behind early, but clawed all the way back to take a 14-13 lead after a Stefana Stan kill. BU would lead as late as 18-17, but Albany went on to score eight of the set's final nine points to lead 1-0 after the first frame.
The Bearcats led the second set 7-3 and 9-5, but Albany would use a 7-1 run to regain the lead at 12-10. With the set tied at 17 after a Kiara Adams kill, the Great Danes went on to score seven of eight possible points to go up two sets to zero.
The final set saw Albany open a lead and not look back. Binghamton got as close as 14-8, but fell 25-16 to drop the team's opening match.
Against UMBC, the Bearcats trailed most of the opening set, but went on a run to close it to 21-18 late. Ulate added two kills, but the Retrievers went on to close it out, 25-20.
The second set was the closest of the contest, as the frame went back-and-forth the whole way. UMBC took control towards the end of set after a small 4-0 run and eventually won 25-22.
The final set saw a comeback by Binghamton, trimming a 7-2 deficit to 14-13, but BU was unable to gain an advantage in the 25-21 final frame.
Binghamton will next take on Hartford in doubleheader action Wednesday on the road. Match times are slated for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
