VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Binghamton University men's lacrosse team (2-1 AE) defeated UMBC (3-1, 2-1 AE) 8-7 in overtime Wednesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal. Junior attack Daniel MacKinney fired a shot with 0.7 seconds left in overtime to lift the Bearcats to victory over the reigning America East Champions (2019).
"I am super proud of these guys after the tough game this past weekend," head coach Kevin McKeown said. "The guys did a great job moving the ball against the zone. It was great to get a victory against the reigning America East champions today. This victory could be a turning point for our season."
The Bearcats opened the first period with a goal from junior midfielder Andrew Arce. The one goal lead was erased by the Retrievers a few moments later. Binghamton retaliated with a score of their own when junior midfielder Kevin Winkoff snuck a pass to senior attack Justin Roderka for an underhanded goal. UMBC would go on to tie the game up in the last minute of the first period.
The second period featured a heavy defensive battle on both sides of the field, with only one finish in the period. Binghamton's Quinn O'Hara tallied his first goal of the season to break the tie and give the Bearcats the lead heading into the break.
Momentum was on Binghamton's side as Winkoff hit sophomore Thomas Greenblatt for a goal in the first 30 seconds of the third period and senior attackman William Talbott-Shere drove from behind the cage and hit a left handed goal to give the Bearcats a 5-2 lead moments later. Momentum shifted again as UMBC answered with two of their own.
Each team tallied four goals in the third period, leaving a 7-6 edge for BU.
In the fourth period, UMBC evened the score at seven. With opportunities arising, both teams were unable to capitalize as the defenses held strong. Overtime featured several possessions for each team that featured a handful of scoring opportunities. Binghamton capitalized off of a save from Dolan to earn a clear, and senior Sean Makar proceeded to hit McKinney with a pass to set up the game winning bouncer in the final second.
Dolan had a career game, recording 18 saves while relinquishing just seven goals. Eight of those 18 saves came in the crucial minutes of the fourth quarter.
The Bearcats and Retrievers will face off again this Saturday, Mar. 27 at noon, this time at UMBC Stadium.
