Men's Lacrosse Wins Season Opener 11-5

Senior Justin Roderka nets five goals in the victory over NJIT

NEWARK, NJ -- The Binghamton men's lacrosse team (1-0 AE) won its season opener this afternoon over NJIT (0-3, 0-1 AE), 11-5. The Bearcats effort was spearheaded by senior attack Justin Roderka. Roderka scored five goals in the contest, three of which came in the first half of play.

"It was great to get the first win under our belts today," head coach Kevin McKeown said. "Justin Roderka did a great job finishing plays today on the offensive side of the ball. Matt DeSouza and our faceoff unit did a great job battling at the faceoff X. Today was a great start, but we certainly saw areas we need to improve on as we move forward to next week."

After trading goals through most of the first period, the Bearcats gained momentum off a diving goal made by William Talbott-Shere at the buzzer. Roderka wasted no time picking up where he left off, netting back-to-back goals for Binghamton in the first three minutes of the second period. Thomas Greenblatt and Roderka combined for two more, and the Bearcats took an 8-4 lead into halftime.

After a standstill third period, Greenblatt and Daniel MacKinney added three more tallies to the scoresheet in the fourth, propelling Binghamton to an 11-5 victory in its season opener.

Sophomore Matt DeSouza controlled the game for Binghamton at the faceoff X, winning 12 of 17 faceoffs in the game. Redshirt-sophomore Teddy Dolan earned the win in the net with five saves.

The Bearcats are back in action Saturday, March 13 at 1 p.m. for their home opener against UMBC.
