Women's soccer blanks Fordham 2-0

Anand, O. McKnight tally second-half goals off feeds from Piantadosi as BU wins home opener

VESTAL, N.Y. - Maya Anand and Olivia McKnight netted second-half goals on assists from Stefania PiantadosiĀ and Binghamton women's soccer (1-1) posted a 2-0 win over visiting Fordham (0-2) Sunday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex.Ā

After a scoreless first half, BU struck in the 58th minute after withstanding some pressure from the Rams. PiantadosiĀ found AnandĀ at the far post with a cross from the right and Anand's headerĀ from a tight angle went back across the goalmouth and into the right corner for a 1-0 lead.

Led by the center midfield Tandem of Victoria McKnight and Olivia McKnight, the Bearcats began to control play thereafter and picked up an insurance goal in the 77th minute. Olivia McKnight took a feed from PiantadosiĀ 35 yards out in the middle and shielded possession while dribbling into the box. McKnight then ripped a right-footed shot that found the far corner, despite the Rams' keeper getting a piece of it.Ā

Meanwhile, senior keeper Haylee Poltorak made eight saves to notch her 18th career shutout.

"It was a well-earned victory today," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We stepped up our lines and pressure in the second half and once we did that we got some good moments in transition and scored two quality goals because of it. And then we did everything we needed to do to hold off a dangerous Fordham attack. We needed to show some resilience coming off a tough loss Thursday and we did that today."Ā Ā Ā Ā

Poltorak made a diving save 11 minutes into the game to keep the first half scoreless and BU earned five corner kicks in the opening period but didn't capitalize. Less than nine minutes into the second half, Anand ripped a shot off the far post. Just over four minutes later, BU struck for its first goal and turned the tide with 59 percent possession in the second half.

The Bearcats next begin three straight road games with a Thursday afternoon test at Bryant (R.I.).Ā
