PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Binghamton volleyball team completed a three-set sweep over Fairleigh Dickinson to kick off the Friar Volleyball Classic Friday afternoon. The Bearcats battled deficits in every frame to come away with the 26-24, 25-23, 25-21 victory.
"We had some timely contributions from many players", head coach
Glenn Kiriyama said. "Down by eight in the third set, both Tyra and Vic (Erwat) had some great service runs. Our middles also hit and blocked well throughout."
Stefana Stan capitalized on a strong first set (seven kills) to come away with 14 for the match, while
Victoria Erwat added a career-high 13 kills.
Kiara Adams was the lead distributor for the Bearcats, handing out 31 assists while
Emily Rail continued to lead in the back with 14 digs.
The first set went back-and-forth throughout, with each side taking the lead several times in the frame. A key run was capped off by a
Tyra Wilson kill to take a 22-20 lead before FDU scored three straight points to take the lead once more. Binghamton used a timeout before scoring four of five points to take the set, 26-24.
The following set had runs from both sides, with Binghamton leading for most of the set. The Knights battled back from a 23-19 deficit to get within one at 24-23, but BU scored the clinching point to take the demanding two-set advantage.Â
FDU seemed to be on the way to a third-set win, but Binghamton roared back from an 18-10 deficit to take a 19-18 lead. Following a timeout by the Knights, the Bearcats kept the pedal down to coast to the 25-21 win.
Anna Sprys had two convincing kills down the stretch en route to the victory.
