Women's soccer handles St. Francis 2-0

Bearcats get goals from Gilmore and Anand, celebrate Senior Day with third shutout of season

VESTAL, N.Y. - Peyton Gilmore and Maya Anand tallied first-half goals and Binghamton women's soccer (3-4-1) celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 shutout over visiting St. Francis Brooklyn (1-3-3) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Bearcats held a season-high 60 percent possession and struck for two goals in the opening 21 minutes to get back in the win column. After the quick action to open the game, the teams played a scoreless final 69 minutes.

"We are pleased to get the result today," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We've had a rough go of it for about a week and a half but also knew we were playing upper-tier opponents so it's been good preparation. I'm glad we got the two goals in the first half today and happy to be back on the winning side of things. Our effort was good and we were able to play a lot of different people. It was a great day for us to celebrate our seniors."

On the first goal 7:47 into the contest, Gilmore was taken down on the far left edge of the box after some good 1-on-1 work. Junior midfielder Olivia McKnight took the ensuing free kick and sent a low ball across the goalmouth. Anand beat her mark to get to it and after a brief scuffle, Anand toed the ball laterally to Gilmore, who easily tapped it in from four yards for her first collegiate goal.

Anand then got into the scoring column just over 12 minutes later. After taking a feed from sophomore midfielder Victoria McKnight on the left, Anand cut inside and unleashed an 18-yard shot to the lower left corner for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

BU outshot the Terriers 16-8 and earned five corner kicks. Senior keeper Haylee Poltorak made five saves to notch her third shutout of the season.

Binghamton plays its final non-conference game Wednesday at Cornell before hosting Vermont in the America East opener next Sunday.
