Volleyball rallies to down Siena in five sets

Bearcats have contributions from several down the stretch, led by Stan's 18 kills

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team celebrated its fourth victory of the season Wednesday evening, as it downed Siena in five sets. The Bearcats rallied to win the match's final two sets for a final scoreline of 23-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-17, 15-13.

"This was a great team effort," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "We showed a lot of poise in the fifth set comeback. Anna Sprys was effective throughout the match, with her hitting and blocking and Stefana (Stan) was blasting away on the outside with timely kills."

Stan led the way for Binghamton with 18 kills, as Sprys added 12 kills and seven blocks. Emily Rail continued to lead in the back, contributing 21 digs, and Kiara Adams handed out 42 assists. Victoria Erwat and Elis Gadelha had huge finishes down the stretch to help seal the win.

The first set was led by Siena throughout, despite several comeback attempts by BU. After trailing 10-3 early, the Bearcats cut the deficit to 19-18 on a kill by Stan and 23-22 on a Saint attack error. Siena went on to score two of the final three points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.

The second set went back-and-forth, with Binghamton pulling away at the end. A key four-point run was sparked by two Stan kills and a block by Sprys and Adams. Annie Bart would add a finish, as BU took the frame 25-21.

The next two sets were split, with Siena pulling ahead in the third and Binghamton running away with the fourth. In the fourth, Stan, Gadelha and Erwat all had important kills to take the set, 25-17.

The Saints rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the fifth to take the lead in the fifth set. Despite training for most of the remainder of the frame, Binghamton scored crucial points when it counted, taking six of the final seven points to take the set and match.

The victory was the team's 15th in program history against Siena, and BU now has a 15-5 record against the Saints. Binghamton has now won three of its last four matches.

The Bearcats will have a quick turnaround, and will take on Delaware State for their home opener Friday. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
