VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team opened Friday's home opener with a first-set win, but ultimately fell to Delaware State in four sets. The final score line of the match was 25-22, 24-26, 10-25, 25-27 in favor of the Hornets.
The Bearcats were led by Kiara Adams' 32 assists and Victoria Erwat's 13 kills. Emily Rail led the team 16 digs.
The Hornets took the early lead in the first set, but Binghamton rebounded late in the frame to change the momentum. Trailing 18-14, the team rattled off six of seven points to take the 20-19 lead. Two kills by Elis Gadelha down the stretch helped carry the Bearcats to the 25-22 win to kick off the match.
BU led for a majority of the third set, and stretched the advantage out to 15-9 before Delaware State rattled off six straight points to tie the score. Binghamton regained control once more to lead 24-20, but the Hornets used another 6-0 run to close the set.
Delaware State was able to pull away in the third set, but Binghamton kept it close in the fourth. Trailing 17-15, the Bearcats were able to score four straight points to take the 19-17 lead. A kill by Erwat made it 24-23 in favor of the hosts, and another made it 25-24, but the Hornets went on to score three straight points to take the set and match.
The Bearcats will have the opportunity to take on the Hornets once more, as they head to Dover for a match on Sunday. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
