Women's soccer edged in OT at UML 1-0

Host River Hawks net game-winner in 99th minute, deal BU its first conference loss

LOWELL, Mass. - UMass Lowell (5-3-1, 2-0 America East) netted the winning goal 8:11 into the first overtime to knock off Binghamton women's soccer (5-5-1, 1-1 AE) 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field. Playing the team's second straight overtime game, the Bearcats came up short when an 18-yard strike from a sharp angle on the left carried into the far left corner.

The River Hawks had a 10-8 edge in shots and the teams combined for 31 fouls in the tightly-contested game - a rematch of last spring's America East semifinal game, which Binghamton won 1-0.

"Today was an unfortunate, tough result for us to take," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "The match was about two good sides going at one another and neither one trying to cede any opportunities away. Once we settled in midway through the first half the game very much looked like it had 1-0 written all over it. Credit to UMass Lowell for finding a special moment in overtime for the difference maker. Our players played with terrific heart and effort and if we continue that, we will find more America East results down the road. We wil take this on the chin, recover and look forward to getting back after it again on Thursday."

The Bearcats held the better of play throughout much of the second half and had dangerous chances by leading scorer Maya Anand early in the period. But both shots were partially blocked by UML defenders. Binghamton's best scoring chance, however, was a first-half sequence of passes by Anand and junior midfielder Olivia McKnight that set up sophomore Davia Rossi with a 12-yard shot. But Rossi's right-footer was saved in the 34th minute.

Veteran wing back Kayla MacKenzie took the field for the first time this season after recovering from a preseason injury and she played 68 minutes off the bench.

Binghamton next hosts UMBC Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
