Volleyball falls in doubleheader

Bearcats drop contest to St. Francis Brooklyn in five sets, are swept by Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, PA. - The Binghamton volleyball team dropped two contests Saturday, to cap off the Lehigh Steel Tournament. The Bearcats were defeated by St. Francis Brooklyn 25-12, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 10-15 before falling to Lehigh by a score of 25-14, 25-19, 25-22.

The Bearcats were led by freshman Carly Powell in the first match, as she tallied 15 kills in her second career start. Stefana Stan (13 kills), and Anna Sprys (11 kills) joined her in double figures, as Emily Rail led the way in the back with 19 digs. Tyra Wilson also added four blocks and Kiara Adams handed out 42 assists.

The Bearcats won the first two sets in convincing fashion, and led the third set 23-20, before the Terriers rattled off five straight points to take the frame. The fourth set went back-and-forth, before three straight points (25-22) by the Terriers evened the match up at two sets apiece.

The fifth set was similar to the third and fourth, until St. Francis Brooklyn went on a run half-way through the set before closing out the match, 15-10.

Against Lehigh, Powell and Elis Gadelha each had five kills, while Sprys and Stan had four.

After falling in the first two sets, the Bearcats kept it close with the Mountain Hawks in the third. Despite scoring five of seven ponts down the stretch, Lehigh put away the game-winner to take the match.

Binghamton will head to Providence next weekend to continue tournament play. The team's first match will be against Fairleigh Dickinson at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
