Men's basketball edged by Stony Brook at wire

BU puts five in double figures; comes up one shot short in 74-71 setback at Events Center

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Stony Brook converted 27-of-34 free throw attempts, including 16-of-18 in the second half and the preseason favorite Seawolves (11-6, 3-1 America East) held off Binghamton men's basketball (6-8, 3-2 AE) 74-71 Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.

Stony Brook received a game-high 25 points from Anthony Roberts and used a wide discrepancy in foul shots to win despite shooting just 34 percent from the field. Binghamton made seven more field goals but surrendered 15 offensive rebounds to the Seawolves, who then cashed in at the line for the winning margin. The choppy game was bogged down with 39 foul calls and multiple reviews.

Binghamton played from behind for more than 35 minutes but cut a 10-point deficit to one twice in the final 25 seconds. The first came on a 3-pointer from junior guard Tyler Bertram (13 pts.) that made the score 70-69 with 0:25 left. But the Seawolves converted 4-of-4 free throws in the closing 18 seconds to offset a driving layup by junior forward Jacob Falko (13 pts.) with 11 seconds left. The  Bearcats had one final shot to force overtime but a rushed Bertram 3-pointer from the top of the key was off the mark.

"It was a hard fought game," head coach Levell Sanders said. "I thought they were more aggressive than us going to the basket, creating contact and getting to the free throw line. Stony Brook was picked to win it all and they have a lot of talent, but I'm happy with the way we battled. We just have to clean up some of the little things that hurt us tonight. When we got down, we kept fighting and made some big plays down the stretch. We'll learn from it and get better."

Junior forward Christian Hinckson posted his second double-double of the season with team-highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kellen Amos hit 5-of-7 shots for 12 points and classmate John McGriff added 10 points.

The Bearcats next head to Newark for a Saturday night matchup with NJIT.
